If I fill up the minute my low fuel light comes on, I put in about 17.5-18 gallons. I get about 19-20 mpg. Seems these lights are pretty varied?

My light came on driving between New Mexico and Colorado and I went 50-60 miles with the light on and filled up 19.5 gallons.. My gauge was way below the line and on its way to the E by a significant margin. I was utterly shocked when it said I had put in 19.5 gallons

That's the dumbest thing I have heard since the "Why I removed my headrests" thread. That's like saying not all gallon milk jugs are the same.

    YOU GOT RIPPED OFF!!!!

Toyota says the tank is 21 Gal and I assume you STILL have some gas left in the tank (because you DROVE there, not being towed) and you pumped and PAID for 21.3 gal. This concludes you got ripped off....you must sue that station for fraud....

I try not to go less than 1/4th of a tank befor filling. We have ethanol fuel, so the less air in the tank the better. The ethanol absorbs any moisture in that air, and in the long run, you'll have water in your tank.

Both regular gas and E10 gasohol absorb water (tho E10 does this about 50x faster). You'll run into a problem if enough water gets into the tank to cause phase separation... which takes about 90 days in closed tanks.

It's perfectly reasonable to fill up whenever you want as it's your truck, but your rationale is baseless unless you go 3 months between fill-ups (at which point you should be using a fuel stabilizer).

Enjoy changing fuel parts if you do that for your trucks life while you're the owner of it.

When the fuel light comes on would depend on the rake of the vehicle. I think that would be the difference from vehicle to vehicle. My light comes on when I'm parked in the drive way then will go away once I get on flat ground. You know what I mean so there is a variance in how far you can drive once the light comes on. Plus our mileage per gallon varies a lot.

Here in Wisconsin the state "protects" us:rolleyes: Division of weights and measures check gas stations to assure they are pumping what they say they are pumping.

I've done this before. I've gotten 21.2. That was topping it off... Then I read about the whole charcoal canister crap. Now I stop when the pump stops.

When my V6 ran out, rolling to a stop across the street from the station I was about to pull into, 4.7 miles after the fuel light turned on, it took 2 gallons in a can + another 16.5 gallons at the pump to fill up. I thought it was wrong when it clicked off at 16.3 so I waited a bit and restarted on first click.... stopped right away.

I've had my ultragauge set for an 18.5 gallon tank ever since, even on my 4 cyl
