I have to point out that this discussion was based on comparing two rims with dissimilar widths, dissimilar bs and dissimilar offsets. To compare them using offset instead of bs allows for making a valid comparison of where the tread of the tire will end up for rubbing purposes because rubbing on the pinch weld is dependent on the center-line and width of the tire. If the only concern was rubbing on the UCA and frame, then the bs alone is enough.

 

Yes, agreed! I'm coming from the viewpoint of rubbing on the frame so I'm more concerned about BS. Looking at offset will be more applicable to the pinch weld since that is more in line with the centerline.

 

I'm having the same battle in my mind as I'm debating if an aftermarket set of wheels will make a 255/85/16 rub on the frame or on the fenders. See if you guys can help me out.

I have stock 7" wheels w/ 4.70" BACKSPACING and -1.25 offset. On these wheels the tires did not rub at all. But I want a different look so I'm looking at some level 8 ZX wheels. They are 8.5" wide, 4.5" backspace, and -.26 offset (almost 0)


As I understand it Offset = Centerline - BACKSPACING

I'm trying to figure out if the new wheels will push the tires out (away from the frame) a little more than stock wheels. Also trying to figure out if the new wheels would cause rubbing. I'm going off my knowledge that stock wheels and 255/85/16's don't cause rubbing

 

I'd recommend checking if your tires will fit. BFG recommends 6.5"-8" wide rims for the 255/85r16 KM2s.

The rims will push the tires 0.2" away from the frame. (you're going from a 4.7" BS to a 4.5" BS)

Not sure what rubbing you'll get on the pinch weld.

 

I called cooper the other day and they said I would be fine, just not to go any wider. Hopefully they are correct!

If the new wheels only move the tire out by .2" then I should be clear of the fender and frame.

The frame should be fine. The fender, I'm not sure on. The inside bead will be 0.2" farther from the frame but the outside bead will now be 1.7" out from the frame.

If you have already beat down the pinch weld, I would expect you'd be fine but estimating from the fact that I'm running an 8" wide rim with 4" BS and 285/75r16s.

I like the slimmer design for this bumper compared to the last front bumper. any chance at a diy bumper?

 

The next model will have a winch mount. This is the Weight Saver 1000.
I can do no cutout, different light holes, things like that. A DIY kit would be easy enough, so I could do that too.

 

I like with the Toyota, but don't like those long cutouts in the middle

 

You have to have them to be able to put a receiver pin in for the winch. Sure they could be a little smaller but if you have gloves on for some reason or just big hands in general you would appreciate the size. They will blend in when it's black.

That looks awesome. I haven't been keeping up with the changes you made to the bumper but judging from how it looked when you first made it compared to how it looks now, it looks so much better. So did you cut it down? It does look slimmer and doesn't stick out so far past the body. Good job

 

I actually completely redesigned it. This is totally new; I didn't keep anything from the old design except the mounting points.

Thanks guys. I'm happy with it. I will be putting this one up for sale so I can build a similar bumper with a winch.

 

I just realized would it's slim design allow for headlight hoops?

 

Decided it was time to get back to work on my extra cab storage box. Have the frame in and mounted. Now just have to build the box.

 

I'm going to put a center hoop on this one. There's room. Not a lot, but there's enough. The winch bumper will stick out farther so it won't be as tight.
