Noel, skylights will save you alot of money vs. dormers.

    That's quite true.

Hey, can you snap some pics of the siding and the materials you are using? Looks like vinyl, which is what we are using. Might make for a good reference.

SOME skylights open for ventilation. Those are also usually the ones that leak after a few years, heh. My parents have both fixed and opening skylights; the fixed lights are 20 years old and are leak-free; the opening ones have been replaced (under warranty by Andersen) 4 times in the same 20 years.
Which is why I'm considering dormers, lol. Our roof typically has at least a foot of snow on it during the winter, and I'd be concerned about leaking issues after a couple of years with the opening skylight models.

But, pics are always great! I'd appreciate the doc process, if you don't mind!

A legitimate concern IMO. Dormers are great, but it is a lot of material cost.

This is true; Perhaps I should go with the sealed skylights (roof windows, the guy at Hammond Lumber called them,) and just run wiring for a fan. That'd circulate the heat down and out of the windows in the room...
Currently the entire addition is basically windows and doors. I'm considering the opening-style skylights or dormers so that I could get the increased ventilation through convection rather than using a fan.
But; keeping costs down is never a bad idea.
Regardless; I'd still like to see photos of your dormer project!

Ya sure. Ill get some at the end of the day when we wrap up. Vinyl is awesome for big open areas, but is kinda a PITA in areas like dormers. We use J channel, F channel, metal starter strips, undersill, perforated soffit and wrapping the fascias and returns in metal. No exterior trim on the windows here, you can either use metal or buy vinyl window trim.

The more the merrier. If you write a tutorial that would be sweet. We're under a time crunch.

I hear ya, theres no such thing as a construction project that isn't a time crunch. Ill see if i can find some time tomorrow for a mini write up. Sounds like you know what your doing with the framing and roofing, you just haven't done vinyl before? Its easy, but there is a little learning curve vs. other types of siding becasue there is extra parts and steps. What are you doing for the fascias? Are you going to be bending metal and do you have access to a brake?

Im pumped for my day with overland experts next week! Check out the schedule, i have to sign a seriuos waver lol.

    Schedule

9am-10amOne hour lecture on the 5 systems of all 4wd vehicles. This lecture sets
up a linear and methodical curriculum that is essential to the rest of the course. This will be the only time spent in the “classroom.”

10am-10:30Vehicle familiarization, driver positioning, transfer case operation, tire
    pressure, lockers. Vehicle specific analysis.

10:30-noonWork in our gravel pit on wheel placement, ramping, failed hill
maneuvers, terrain reading, and the 5 steps to driving any obstacle

    12-12:30pmLunch

12:30-2pmWork on the hill section of our course where we have 5 purpose built hill
climbs of varying difficulty. You will learn how to safely navigate up
and down hills using varying techniques. Transmission braking and
throttle control will be continually stressed.

2pm-5pmRock Steps, ditches, moguls, mud, water, side slope recovery, and spotting will be taught in succession. Varying degrees of difficulty will be encountered and the opportunity for repetition in a trail ride scenario will be present depending on time.

I'll measure tomorrow but they took a good bit off the bottom. Some of the shops actually replaced the pedal with a shorter one, some just cut the bottom. You can tell if yours was cut by looking at the pedal, the groves that go top to bottom run straight to the bottom of the pedal (where as the top has a surround piece that's flat, the bottom used to have it but it gets cut off).

Same here, I already had Husky liners in place also.

Operable vs. fixed shouldn't make any difference if installed properly. The operable ones have a large lip (or they should at least) so as long as it's properly flashed in, water shouldn't be able to make it around that lip (the operable part overlaps the lip from the top so water would have to run uphill). So as long as the frame is put together well and does not contain any holes or weak spots, it shouldn't leak. All that being said, if it's within your means, I'd take a dormer over a skylight any day!
