New carry gun

As many of you may know, a full size 1911A1 is not very easy for concealed carry.

So I picked my self up a S&W 642airweight Very nice pistol for concealed carry! Its rated for 38S+P so with those hollow points its got a good amount of stoping power. very rounded design that fits well on the person, double action with enclosed hammer (hammerless) so it dosnt snag on anything. Thus far it is a great pistol.....not a bad price either....around 400 where I live.

You can now also get the laser grips for them! cant wait to get those next! I think it will be good to leave with the wife when I am on deployments as well.

I know a few people with the hammerless S&Ws as every day carry guns. They're dependable and more than accurate for the intended purpose. None of them have bothered with fancy sights based on the assumption that if the bad guy is far enough away to need them he's probably too far enough away to justify shooting.

these type of snub nose revolvers are pretty much a "belly gun"
i wouldn't plan on accuracy at much more than 15 yards max (thats in perfect conditions)
but sometimes a red or green dot on your chest is enough to deter a threat.

 

thats a great gun for concealed carry. good for your wife too. .38 revolver is a very easily managable gun and round for anyone who is not an avid shooter.

 

unfortunately sometimes (depending on where you live) a laser sight can get the gun carrier in trouble if they use it. sometimes any modifacations done to your weapon show "intent" to use it against a person. a good defense lawyer can argue that that "intent" makes you the badguy. pretty stupid, i know, but it has happened. i have noproblem admitting that if i shoot someone with a gun i damn well ''intended" to do it, thats the point of a CWP!!! oh well.... i need to shut up before i get worked up

 

I was coaching my wife on her rather tight group, of two cylinders for 10 rounds, out of her S&W 640. I wanted her to bring her shots up in height for center of mass on an IPSC target. She took my suggestions in normal fashion especially when another guy at the end of the bench brought something to my attention. He said, hey she just put all 10 on his balls, hell I wouldn't mess with her. We all got a pretty good laugh out of that.

 

15 yds is quite a distance for any handgun and most shooters in a high stress situation.

 

The laser sight will be for my wife most likely. I like shooting for just pure marksmanship (granted there is not much with a snub nose but still)....I figure if the guy is comming through the window, she will probably not be thinking so well as to carefully aim.

 

basically all she needs to do is pull the trigger (in any direction) and the guy is going back out the way he came as fast as possible.

 

I seem to remember the approx. time it takes for an aggressor to advance 25 feet is less than 7 seconds (may have been less than 5).....you will never need a grip laser for that type of situation, just practice in the field and confidence in your weapon. Range time is nice but how often do you have your weapon out, loaded, and unlocked with all the time in the world to identify and sight your target. find some BLM Land and take the wife out to practice. I started my wife on a .25 and worked her up to .45acp she shoots better than me these days. No permit so most of her practice these days is with the 870 express w/ 00buck

Great gun for carrying...I have an old S&W J-Frame that's become my desk drawer gun, but before that, it was what I carried in my pocket for those "less than friendly" places I had to go. The airweight is even better at about 1/3 the weight.

As for laser sight grips, I just ordered one for my Ruger

SP101 that I leave in the truck (for hunting...). There's nothing wrong with getting all the help you can get with aiming in a high stress situation.

 

Spray and pray works for Sheriffs dept. and local PD so thats good enough for me..... Kimber Procarry .45 for travel. I try to avoid areas that I feel the need for a carry pistol, they are normaly places I wouldnt leave my truck. San Jose was the safest big city in america...now 3rd (illegals and thier now spawn).

 

I'll tell ya' - I tried carrying around 10lbs of Pittsburgh steel in my waistband for about two years...never could get comfortable with it. I've got Glocks, Springfield XD's, 1911's, etc. But, nowadays, the pistol I carry the most is a Kel-Tec PF9 (yeah yeah, Kel-Tec sucks...but it hasn't failed me once yet with 700+ rounds through it). Also, I just got a Ruger LCP for when the PF9 is a little too big.

Update: After about 1000 rounds, the PF-9 now has feeding/reliability issues...back to the factory...

 

old fashon wheel gun in .38 for ccw don't get much betta. Wish the peoples republik of california would realize gun control creates more crime. Brady bill is crap......

 

9mm has too much velocity, overpenitration would be an issue for an armed civ.....want to be careful not to violate another innocent persons rights while protecting yours! Heston died, damn shame.......

 

Not a bad choice. More of an auto kind of guy myself. I am looking at the Kahr P9 or CW9 and the SIG 232. I shot them at a shooters show at a local gun shop this weekend and I shot the 232 better than my 220 that I have owned for 15 years. That thing is a naildriver. Too bad about it's a .380 though. I want to carry a 9mm as 40s and 45s have a lot of recoil in something small.

 

I agree that overpenetration can be a problem, but with those huge open-ended hollow points, I'm told you can get it to slow down fairly rapidly if you hit center mass or just shoot them in the hip to incapacitate. Also, low recoil ammunition helps.

And yes, it is a damn shame that Charlton Heston died...he understood that if you care about civil liberties, the 2nd Amendment should always be included.
