I am a union member in a skilled trade.

My union has a good relationship with the employers who hire us, as roughly 75% of the entire trade in this country is union.

My union has a 1 year probationary period where an employer or the union can fire you for any reason what so ever, with no explanation. If you don't work your ass off, you're toast.

After that probationary period, if work slows down and companies lay people off, the people who get picked for work are picked by hand based on merit. If you don't work your ass off, you don't have a job.

We have a 4 year training program that is mandatory, with something like 500 class hours and 6,000 on-the-job training hours, before becoming a journeyman, as well as continuing education every year, for every member.

So to say that unions do nothing but protect shitty workers is bullshit. My union is small, 25,000 members in the US and Canada, and has negotiated very good benefits and compensation for our trade because the union weeds out bad apples who want everything for nothing, before they ever start work.

Unions can absolutely be a good thing for both employees and employers.

Just because I'm in a union, does not mean I'm the same as these fuckfaces from BART.

I support other unions in general, and the company I work for has contracts for new installs at BART, but they use their own technicians who are not in my union to do what is essentially my unions' work, for way less money and an obvious huge disparity in quality of work.

Bart made my commute going home increase by about 2 hours with this most recent strike. They're not winning people over with this shit.

As a member of a union, I support the cause, but think that both sides need to ACTUALLY negotiate.

As a commuter and occasional Bart rider, who's had some less than ideal interactions with BART employees, fuck 'em. (Except the cops, They're still working through this shit.)

You're right, I generalized a bit too much. There are many unions that do great things. However, I just feel that there are more and more each day now that promote negative work ethics.

I saw how teachers unions started demanding when my Mother was in education, she has since left. Bart employees just finalized their last (incredibly generous) offer and strike not 4 months ago, now they are at it again? I don't even make half of their line-workers as an officer in the military, you don't see me or any of my colleagues complaining.

I didn't mean to offend you or anyone else on the forum that is part of a union that may be keeping quiet. That was not my intention.

I just get aggravated and frustrated with the sense of entitlement that many people seem to have these days.

So other than crossing through the parking spaces, what else did I do wrong? This rather large woman was shouting at me and my mother.

Was recorded with one of Alex's dash cams
