Makes perfect sense. The d72a seems like the best option given you want to make it portable. I think I'd do the same. Please share pics of your install when you do it. :D

That would be awesome. The .240 machine that covers San Diego is actually on Monument Peak which is on the far eastern edge the Laguna mountains. It serves the desert region far better than San Diego. All that means is that I really need to be in a good QTH, and stationary for reliable QRK.

Cool, thanks. I will look at those. Now that build/install is one ridiculously capable vehicle! Clean work on that one.

I'd say you're quite correct. I was a frequency coordinator for about 30 years and ran a scanning/logging program to see which were just 'paper' repeaters and which were actually running.

Thanks for the advice on APRS and on not letting non-Hams transmit on a borrowed H/T. Best to keep out of trouble and the proper way would be for these guys to get a license for sure. As mentioned some of them use CB and from what I heard they don't much care to follow the rules, and frankly I want no part of that horseplay. Yet trail communication can be so helpful.

There are several noise canceling speakers on the market (BiHi MFJ etc) that work quite well. I use a commercial p/s speaker on my FM stuff and plugged the HF into the AUX on the truck radio. I either listen to the radio or the HF but never both.

The FCC lost control of the CB stuff years ago and if the hams them self's don't protect the 2 meter band it will become another CB mess just don't talk to them don't argue with them and don't give them the audience they are looking for. If I find that kind of behavior going on, on our repeaters I turn it off (that is possible from away) with no remorse after awhile they go away and I turn it back on.

For your trail group I recommend to use license free modes of communication for that. FRS/MURS/CB. All that said, you could still give a non ham a ham radio to listen to and send him/her instructions, but they should not key the mic. If they want to use the radio, encourage them to get licensed. :)[/QUOTE]

It is also illegal to send message to an arbitrary recipient it is considered "broadcasting" They can listen all they want but you cannot send "messages" to them (you are talking to a non ham). Coded messages are also illegal unless you are a controller of a space station (amateur sat.) There is only one exception, "life or death" situations and then any means of communications available to anyone is fair game.

We used to do our PD's cars/trucks in house but now they take them to an outfit in MA to have them done that is all they do cop cars and PS stuff. It is a huge facility every time I want down to pickup a new car there was at least 100 cars/truck in their lot. At any given time there were more than 2 dozen cars in the shop having all the bells and whistles installed. It was all ways fun to go down to see what kind of new gadgets they had. Guess you all have a lot of D-Star activity very little up our way we do link repeaters with Echolink but D-Star stuff is a little too pricey for us poor folk.

Any one have a IC 7000 in their truck? I just bought one and it may replace the IC 706 that's in there now as soon as I read the 156 page manual. I don't have a one way radio with a video display in the truck but the IC 7000 has composite video output that would be nice hooked to the stereo display.

Any operators in the TAcoma/Olympia area? I need some hands on intro to this hobby. Been thinking of getting into it for a long time, but I'd like to talk/see some set ups.

Tim, you made me go read the rules! (That's always a good thing.) :) And you're right! The rules however define broadcasting as messages intended for general public... Whereas the trail-com example would probably be an illegal one-way transmission. Either way, it's not allowed.

Fine line, to me a one way transmission is broadcasting. However I guess if you are instructing some one that is not necessarily a "broadcast" as it is intended for them only but still against the rules guess they got to cover all bases. Did you look up 97.111? I think that is for ham sat. control and that is all so exempt from encryption for obvious reasons. I'm glad you looked it up the more people we can get to understand the rules the better our hobby will be other wise it will just become another CB mess on 2 meters it's bad enough now.

I'm all for keeping Amatuer Radio legitimate. I am going on a trail run this coming week and many of the guys have CB, so (as much as I detest it) I put my little Uniden 520 in the Tacoma so we can keep track of each other.

I was trying to talk some of the guys into getting a Technician license and a 2M radio, but honestly they dont understand and act uninterested if it means studying and then actually following rules. (like a bunch of kids). Once I used my 2M mobile a few times it made sense to me. What is not to like about reliable communications for 20 to 50 miles?
