Why I removed my headrests..

I love this thread. It makes me feel really good about my life choices.

 

I removed my airbags and headrests. It's a pretty easy mod I think everyone should do.

 

The thread went silent for 2 days, wasn't expecting that.

 

I'm thinking of removing all the stop signs in my town. They are unsightly and the eye-catching red is a distraction.

 

People make controversial choices sometimes, but they are not so black and white. I keep my uncomfortable/unsightly headrest, I also keep my seatbelt on and airbags in (not that I've ever had one deploy or truly confirmed if they air-bags are sound. I hear of used car dealers just stuffing newspaper in those airbag cavities, but I digress)...

with that said, as an example, seatbelts aren't safer than no seatbelts, 100% of the time. I have a friend who never wears one (Colorado hillbilly) and he's been t-boned a couple times as a passenger. He moved over abruptly both times to avoid the worst of the impact. He feels he would've died by now had he been restrained, unable to move to the side.

Anyway, there are always exceptions and ultimately, no one's going to really care one way or the other. Keep the headrest handy for the passenger, and take it off when not in use, if you want, but visibility being cut down on your own side is minimal.

In any case, making threads on controversial decisions you made and basically asking for approval never goes well. I have done this on other forums, like reveal (read: brag) about a solo-kayaking adventure. I should've just kept my mouth shut and kept it to myself. I got lambasted for the decision I made (I came out unscathed). It's just the way of the forum world.

That is a good question.

 

You can put them up on the wall in your house.

 

Learn to use your mirrors proberly.... AND maybe get convex mirrors to cover your perceived "blind spot"...

You need to do like I was taught in driver's ed. Sit in the driver's seat with your head touching the driver's side window then adjust your mirror until you barely see the entire driver's side of your truck. Next slide over until your head is in the middle of the truck and do the same for the passenger side. Now when you see a car in your review mirror and it disappears you will see it immediately in your side mirrors. No more blind spots. This is the way I have mine adjusted for my access cab and no problems seeing other vehicles what so ever.

 

Yeah, that's how I adjust mine too. No blind spots.

 

This thread should be in the category of what is the stupidest thing I can do to my truck.

What's next are you going to take out your seat belts?

....and it comes alive again. I came to this thread from Google because I am struggling with trying to remove my front headrest covers so I can clean them.
Obviously wrong thread for that but I couldn't stop myself from reading.
I can't imagine why anyone would remove safety equipment from their vehicle. I drive a cube van for a living so I am used to always using side mirrors, augmented with small convex mirrors in the corner of each one. No such thing as a blind spot with those... And they're CHEAP!

 

For all those people who got their panties in a bunch, I did re-install my headrests but I continue to believe that not being able to see around them constitutes an unacceptable safety risk. My 2001 Tacoma had headrests that worked just fine without blocking my view. I've yet to find a mirror solution that negates having to turn my head to look during lane changes. Though I did get a big 18" rear view mirror that helps a little.

 

Do you have a regular mirror or a digital one? If you have a regular, then you can get one of those clip-on rear view mirrors. I used to have one and it gives you a pretty good wide angle/panoramic view.

How about replacing the headrest with a smaller aftermarket one, i think the pole width distance is universal.

Wow ... good thing the OP didn't say he removed his headrests ... actually they are head restraints ... in order to have a clearer view in order to shoot at LEOs out his back window.

 

What's a blind spot? I haven't turned my head to look in a blind spot in about 14 years now. It's called fish eyes or those bubble thingies. Try driving a Astro van with zero rear windows like I used to drive for work 14 years ago. You learn quick about only using your side mirrors and fish eyes. Install the small circle mirror on the driver side and the medium size on the passenger mirror. The only head rest I removed is the rear middle, because it's annoying when using your rear view mirror.
