Opinions for my factory side steps

Having a silver truck, black compliments it very nicely and my goal is to slowly get rid of all the chrome. This weekends project will be my factory side steps. I am wanting to use a rattle can bedliner product to cover up and texture the chrome. I am already prepared as far as prep/scuffing/cleaning/taping off goes but wondering what the best off the shelf product would be to use. I have searched and have gotten mixed reviews on different brands. I was planning to use the Rustoleum brand but after reading this: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/287385-anyone-use-rustoleum-spray-bed-liner.html I don't know if that is the best choice. I am looking for something durable enough to hold up but not break the bank as I plan to get some actual sliders down the road but working with what I have for now. If it comes out nice, I also wanted to do the chrome on the back bumper. Any suggestions for a lasting finish? Thanks for any input.

 

I've been looking at Kiwigrip Liner.

 

Well I am done and will untape everything tomorrow. I also decided to plasti-dip the door emblems while I was at it. All in all, I think it came out pretty good. I am happy with the results.

and I am happy with the end result except for I think I like the truck better without the steps on there. We will see how that goes but here is a final product picture. It isn't that great but you get the idea. I will still have to go back and do a little touch up on some places around the plastic foot steps because after removing the tape I can see a little chrome around here and there. Shouldn't be too hard.

 

So you used both the bedliner spray & the plastidip? In what order & on what parts?

 

Bed liner for the steps, plasti-dip for the badges fro the looks of it.

 

This is correct. I know that plastidip won't last on the steps so they got 2 healthy coats of the bedliner.

 

I wouldn't have bothered with using PD on a high traffic area. I would have just used the bedliner.

 

Ive never worked with bed coating. Is it similar to undercoating? Ive only ever used undercoating on non truck related projects and that stuff is thick. From the pics it looks like the bed coating is a thin smooth layer. Is that the case? Thanks

 

Blacked out the step rails a few weeks ago and liked the way it looked. They just hide in the black pinch weld and frame.

 

I only used the Plastidip on the badges and only used the bedliner on the steps.

Well, I have never worked with undercoating. The spray bedliner is pretty good stuff depending on what you do with it. It is textured not smooth, sorta gritty although it is kind of hard to see in the pictures. I decided to do 2 coats to make sure that it holds up.

At this point, I have just left them off of the truck for now. I like the way it looks without them on better and it is a nice change for a while. I was never a fan of them but I have to park in a close quarters parking lot at work and they sort of protect against door dings. I want to get the sliders from All Pro.

 

Does bed liner spray out like spray paint? Undercoating sprays out like silly string because of its thickness

 

Yeah, same as spray paint only with a little more pressure since it is squirting grit and such. I would be sure to do it in the open and not directly on something that you don't want over spray near. Other than that, it coats the same as paint only more durable. My brother sprayed the bottom half of his truck with the stuff. He used to have an S-10 and started about half way down the door to the bottom. Looked good and held up well.
