What metric thread is it?

Ok, so I want a shifter knob that I found online... looks just like the one I had in high school. Will it fit? Hell, I don't know...

2008 Tacoma DC LB fo x fo... auto tranny w/ the customary console shift.

I mic'd it and it returned a 0.312 inch reading. That's almost spot on 5/16 but this ain't no USA whip.

Converting puts me in at a weeee bit over 8mm, but I tried a 8mm ka-nut and she's a no go. Could it be the pitch? 1.00 / 1.25 / 1.50

Good grief, I gots one day left and the custom shift knob is a no mo. The threads are coarse in appearance... WTH is it????????

go to home depot and buy a few metric nuts and see which one fits?

A little easier...

Take the shift knob off when you get to the store. Take the shifter into the store with you and start trying to thread some metric bolts into the shifter knob. Sooner or later, you'll find the exact bolt that fits.

There are fine threads & course threads. I'm guessing..it's an 8mm course thread. Probably 8mm X 1.25 thread pitch. The fine thread pitch is 1.0. That's the distance between the threads basically.

 

Roger that... and I actually did just that last week when I first found the aftermarket shift knob online. Ah, but the stock shift knob has a decorative chrome bezel that extends downward below the leather like portion. The internal distance to the threads is so far that none of the 8mm bolts or 10mm bolts that Home Depot and Lowes hand in stock would reach the threads for a test fit. So, I bought a couple 8mm nuts while I was there, walked out into the parking lot and WHAMBO - neither one fit.

I was hoping a Tacomaworld guru of the random "WTF thread is anyway thread" could say, "yeah, that's a 8mm x whatever pitch" and I'd pass that on to the folks who market that retro shift knob.

Is the 8mm large enough (diameter)? Did you try both course (1.25pitch) and fine (1.0pitch) nuts? I'm pretty sure it's a course thread.

I'll take my shifter off and take it into work today - lots of nuts/bolts there to try 'em out with.

edit: I did find one person that claimed it was 8mm x 1.25 however 5 others claimed it was 12mm. One person measured the shank and it came out to be a little over 13mm so I believe the 12mm is right

Just checked my shifter at work. I have 07 TRD Sport Access Cab.

It's definately 8mm X 1.25 threads.

Ahh, in all fairness, briangp hits the center too... altho his bullseye is for the standard shift, which is the 12mm variant.
