I'm running Nitto Trails right now and they have what is called an aggressive sidewall, I realy like the way they look but I want to change to a A/T at that size since I do not wheel and they do cost a lot more than 285's. And since they are so big I don't need the added bling on the side wall. I realy like the Toyo AT11's because of the mild sidewall and tread pattern but I guess the 315 and 35 inch tires are going to weigh a little, my Trails are about 80 lbs. and thats almost a 33. Just wanted some input form the forum members on what they would suggest.

Nitto tires are always extra heavy. Probably heavier than most other AT's at that size. You are right that most 35's will be heavy but there are probably some good 35's out there that don't weigh so much

Yeh, I just checked out the 315/70/17 Duratrac's they are not as heavy as my 285 Nitto's somewhere around 59-60 lbs. I like the Duratrac's but I just want to check out the Toyo's in that size they are on order so I'm waiting but any other suggestions would be appreciated. I was also thinking Hankook Dynapro AT's.

So what are peoples experience with The Cooper Discoverer ST ($259.10) and the Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac ($274.33)? Expensive, but I can get them locally, which is a plus since I live remotely. After my second flat, it’s time to get rid of the highway tires that came on my 2011 Tacoma.

I’m not a 4 wheeler, but have owned 4x4's since 1973 and most of my driving is on gravel logging roads with an occasional need to have a little extra traction.

I have experience with both. I think the Cooper's may suit you better. The duratracs are great, but a little soft and could possibly chunk or slice on shale/gravel. The Cooper's are even available in ST-C form (chip and cut resistant compound)

It looks like you have the Toyo Open Country M/T's how is the road noise?

Would you and anyone else suggest them over the BFG AT's for road noise and wet pavement traction?

Thanks for the info. How do the two tires sound on the pavement? Noisy? How is the ride? Would I notice a difference on pavement vs highway tires in the smoothness of the ride? I think they will be 6 ply tires. I currently still have the stock 4 ply highway tires that came with the truck.

My stock 265/65/17 on my 08 are just about done. i'm looking for a more aggressive looking tire not to big, dont want to lift. Dont do much off roading and dont want to loose the nice ride. i know there are tons of options but can anyone narrow it down to a couple for me, i'm not married to any specific brand.

If you want the stock ride make sure you stick to a P rated tire. If you switch to an LT your ride will stiffen significantly.
Check out p265 70 17 or p265 65 17 Hankook ATM or Toyo Open Country ATII.

I’m looking at the Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx and the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac. Below is a photo of my last truck with some Yokohama Geolander A/T’s. It’s been a couple of years since I sold the truck and bought my 2011 Tacoma brand new. It has the stock 2 ply highway tires on it. I’m curious as to how much different the ride might be between the Coopers and the Goodyears compared to the tires in the photo. Basically tread design and highway noise.

The tires in the photo below aren’t the aggressive tread I remember, but man they picked up the rocks.

Durafails wont be much different. I had a friend who switched from the geolanders to the duratracs and they were about the same. no experience with the coopers though

Duratracs and STMaax have larger voids. They will likely be louder on the highway and pinch less but larger stones. Larger voids helps them keep clear of mud as well.

The tires in the photo above were pretty worn when I took those photos, and unfortunately, I can’t find any other photos that show the tires. The voids look much smaller that either the Duratracs or Coopers. I just wish I could see and feel the tires in person, but all I can do is look at photos and ask questions online.

I don’t need a real aggressive tire, but those highway tires have got to go. That was the first thing I wanted to do when I bought the truck, but it seemed to be a not so wise thing to do money wise.

The Geolanders definitely have smaller voids. IMO, the ST.Maxx and Duratrac are mud/all terrain hybrids. If you are significantly more on road than off, and your off roading is dirt roads and light trails the Maxx and the Duratrac are overkill. If you are off road a lot they are more suitable.
    They certainly look cool.
