Hey BlackDawg, How did u do the dual battery set up and what are the benefits of running that GM 140amp CS144 alternator. Im sorry if it's already in here somewhere but I was not goin to look thru all 260 something pages to find it. I have a lot of accessories I run and wanted to do a dual set up...although I have recently seen a lithium ion battery used to eliminate the need for two battieries in diesel applications. Ideas or knowledge of that comparision? thanks!

 

Dual batteries are nice because you can run all your accessories off their own battery while you never effect the starter battery. This means you know the truck will start the next day no matter what. You can ever jump yourself which I've done if it's too weak.

The cs144 is a 140 amp alternator that puts out about 110 at idle! When under load. That's just awesome. Bigger alternator means better recovery of your batteries and it'll run your stuff off the alternator much better. Seriously well worth it. Awesome easy cheap mod.

Lithium s are sweet..but damn expensive. I've not seen one that'll fit our trucks yet. But I'm sure they would work great as a deep cycle alternative.

Yea sorta.

You'd run the positive from the alternator to the first battery. Your starter battery that runs your truck systems and such. Ten a cable from the starter battery to a solenoid then from solenoid to the second battery.

Or you could run without an isolator and run it as a parallel setup...but you could kill both.

The point of isolating is so you can pretty much kill the second one and the starter battery will still start your truck in the morning.

 

Hey so what are the pros/cons of re-gearing to 4.88s instead of 4.56?
I say this because with the intent that if someday I have to get rid of it (for whatever reason) I would buy another 1st Gen but possibly in an auto. So I figure do the 4.88 now and not have to re-do it AGAIN if I do it to this truck whenever that may be

 

With a manual and 33s you'll be pretty low geared. Manuals are geared lower then autos.

That said I got to drive and ride in an auto with 4.88s and 33s with a tone of armor and it felt just like my 03 on 31s.

Well...unless your a prerunner or a 4 banger..then could be 3.93 or 4.30 or 4.56..

So a 1st Gen. re-gearing from 4.10 to 4.88 wouldn't be too swell for a manual, but ideal for an auto?

 

Numerically lower, mechanically higher.

The 1st gen auto's 1st gear is like 2.83ish and the 1st gen manual's is 3.83ish.
The 1st gen auto's last gear is like 0.70ish and the 1st gen manual's is 0.84ish.

That's a huge difference in 1st gears...

 

If you are running 35's or bigger it would be pretty nice in the manual. Might not be enough for the auto though.

 

Yea perfect for autos. And if you don't mind a super high rpm on the hwy fine for manual. Be super torquy. But damn near 3k for 70mph I think

4.88s with manual an 35s would be fine.
