So, my day starts off great. I shod two horses this a.m. with no fuss and no muss (rare). Yet, when I left the house I had a tingle in the back of my mind that said, "take the camera." So I did.

My last appt calls and asks if I can come a bit later. Slow day so why not. I get there for the appt. The lady pulls the horse out of the barn and I am about to get started. When all hell breaks loose. Two dogs come running out of the woods (her neighbors 2 Old English Bull Dogs 90 pounds each). They commence attacking the horse!!! One jumps up and grabs the horse by the nose and the other is trying to take out its legs.

So, I start kicking dogs, while trying to control a TOTALLY freaked out horse. Oddly, the horse never tries to defend itself, it just keeps running in circles. I football punted the one at the nose (I wear steel toes), it flew about 15 feet and ran like hell the other way. It made a squishing noise when I hit it (yuck). The second one continues to try for the legs and finally gets hold on the right rear leg just about the hock (knee). The horse dropped like a stone, on top of the dog. As the horse gets up the dog tries to make a break for it. I punted him asshole over elbows down the road. Then, I try to assess the damage to a $20,000 horse!!!!!!

Right front (not too bad) but you can see the tendons starting to swell.

Here is the cluster F&%^. Two of the punctures go through the extensor tendon and several layers of muscle. It is a pretty good laceration too.

Did you ever notice....life has a way of booting you in the nuts!!!

That sucks about the horse. Glad you got a few kicks in though. I'd make sure your client sends a bill to the neighbours. Were I am from those dogs would be toast.

Trust me, if I'd have been armed. Their asses would be toast. It happened so damned fast, I didn't even have time to grab my hammer.

Yep, you're lucky those dogs didn't turn on you. If they did....that could have been your blood.

    You did good though.

I went down the the owners home to have a "talk" with them. Luckily, no one was home (not sure if my luck or theirs). The horse owner is a 75 year old lady who weighs 70 pounds soaking wet. I dressed the wounds but dog bites are notoriously infective. Gave her the number to a friend who's a good vet. What a mess.

Supposedly once they have the taste for blood there's no turning them back....so unless the owner is going to change her control of the dogs, they're gonna cause an accident. If there had been someone on that horse, someone would have been on the ground pretty quick.
