that looks terribly off-axis for all that work. you didn't want to push them out a little more to get a little better imaging?

nice looking work, though. i've been wishing i went with a 3-way setup.

It is off axis...and on purpose. By running an a pillar setup on axis you will get a v shaped sound stage typically. Also, go look at a focal utopia be frequency response graph. They build these speakers (really their whole line up) to be run off axis. Running them off axis where they are gave it a much wider sound stage and phenomenal imaging. All this being said, I did put them in temporary pods and experiment with angles before glassing them to make sure I was going to get what I wanted because car acoustics are a slightly unpredictable environment. My last car actually had on axis speakers in the front stage (also utopia be) and it wasn't bad, but I have since experimented a lot with locations and prefer off axis, especially with a speaker that is designed to be run that way (focal).

Tyfighter, pry toward back fo the truck from the bottom lip of AC controls. pull it straight back and out and then let hang.
Pull the bottom of radio face towards you and unclip harness then remove.
Undo four 10mm bolts and then pull towards you.

    My setup:

Love the HDRadio. If just for the album art. Very cool. Don't have the firmware updated yet for the iPhone. Queensryche baby!

Microphone is routed behind the glove compartment , up the pillar then under the headliner behind the console. Seems to work great.

Any headunit can do all that. I still have use of my steering wheel controls. Just need the Metra aswc module. I have Bluetooth. As far as the stock inputs.. you can just rewire yhe ones from the aftermarket HU to those spots. I just have mine ran to my glovebox since I didnt want wires out in the open.

sweet looking pods! were you able to get them on a vertical plane or are they angled in following the angle of the a pillar? also, what did you use for the frame of the pod - 1/4" wood? what's the xover freq on your mid?

i'm experimenting with placement of my L1 Pro R2 tweeters and have them in the a pillar right now just mounted on the a pillar plastic. i tested locations and aiming for a while and the best sound i achieved is physically where they are located now, but angled up towards the rear view mirror and slightly on-axis. that made the soundstage open up wide but with a good focused center image. i've been waiting until i figure what i will do with vinyl/carpet before i fiberglass the pods. it looks like you just covered them with fabric and left the oh-sh!t handle in factory vinyl. it actually doesn't look too bad.

eventually i want to go 3-way with a mid in the pillar, but i would need to get another amp for that. you just inspired me to start saving up for it - the wife is not going to like this idea.

Pods are actually an abs template that I glassed to give it the rigidity and density. I used kitty hair on the backside of the mid and tweeter mounting area to further reinforce it. Mid is crossed over at 350 with a 12db slope and tweeter at 3500. And they are vertical, The mid just barely clears the metal in the pillar. 3 way is the way to go for sure so save up and do it. Oh and the pillars are covered in suede, kinda bored of vinyl at the minute (I cover almost everything in vinyl at work that gets done) and I am thinking about doing my headliner in the matching suede to tie it all together, as well as the upper b and c pillars.

thanks for the info. i'll probably go a suede route similar to you since vinyl can be a little hard to fit contours.

november and december are going to be busy months for me so i don't think i can start this project until next year.
