I think there's some confusion. The truck I am focused on is the 2011 Reg cab. I work there, and hoping I can get an almost straight trade for my 06 F150 that had some mechanical failures (I was sold it being told the issues were fixed and they were not, so the dealer is taking it back for a good price).

Now, I understand that the 19k for the Tacoma seems much compared to other trucks (I will get a better price since I work there). Why does NADA and KBB show 20.5k as the value for it? That does seem exceptionally high. On the other hand, the 06 F150 Lariat Supercab I bought 8 months ago and have only put on 3k miles shows a value of only $13,325 from NADA (less from KBB).

In a perfect world, I'm hoping they give me more than $13,325 on trade (bought for $17,400 and put on brand new tires) since I was lied to about issues on the truck that could have been fixed under warranty. I am then hoping they come down from the $19k on the Tacoma, and hopefully we can meet somewhere in the middle and I only have to pay a bit more.

You can buy my '12 white rc as she sits for 17k, 22k miles  But yeah, if you get a good deal I suppose you should go for it. I mean no disrespect to fellow reg cab owners in saying this... but make sure this is the truck you want and will want in the future. You will be limited to one passenger, at most 2 passengers on bench seat making for 3 uncomfortable people. Also consider that there is no easily affordable way to increase the power of the 4cyl significantly. So you're kind of stuck at 1 comfortable passenger, wet groceries, and potentially unsatisfactory power. Also, you've now linked an '11 - that's prior to the facelift. I'd use that to your advantage when negotiating, even if you work there - the price is (imo) really really far off point. My RC in mint condition with the miles it has blue books for 16k dealership trade.

Haha shit man, I've got a buddy that goes to CSU, maybe I could fly out to see hum and buy your truck at the same time :D

So talking price on the '11 Taco, would 17k be fair? Or even less? How come KBB and NADA list it for 20k?

in the manual doors/ window department, the manny's are a non issue as you can reach them from the driver's seat.

my motto is that if I can reach it, it doesn't need a button.

There are times when you need to roll up your windows while driving and it's a pretty unsafe operation.

OP: $14,500. It may have <12k miles on it but it's pre facelift. and 3 years behind. At that point you may as well push for direct trade

Was that private sale value? Look at the "trade in value". That will get you closer to what the dealer has into it. Most dealers will never pay more than wholesale price for incoming lot cars. That price is 20-25% below KBB trade in value, and they will generally price used cars (retail) at twice what they have into them. They got that truck for $10-12K. If you could get it for $15 that would be a good deal for you and leave enough meat on the bone for the dealer. The thing is they will get you on the trade for your F150 for sure if you lowball them on the Tacoma. Does it matter? Interest rates are so low it won't change your payments much if your loan amount is a couple grand more....buy a salesman lunch and have a chat. It might surprise you...

There are a few common problems, but that particular configuration avoids most, if not all of them. Ironically, most of the issues are with the double cabs, access cabs, V6s, and the earlier models (05,06).

I'm not sure what a fair price is. I paid 17,500 for mine in December of 09. It had 41K on it and was exactly four years old based on production date. I am getting a new company truck, it's a 2014 regular cab Tacoma with automatic trans, 2wd, non-prerunner. The boss paid 18K plus tax, title, license, etc. When I was looking for my truck in 09, a brand new regular cab 4x4 was 20K. I would call around to a few Toyota dealers in your area and tell them you want to buy a new truck in the same configuration as the used one you are considering. Ask them what the no-haggle, real price is, compare that to the used one. I think that price is high. If the trade on your F150 is 13-15K, I would want a straight across trade.

Thanks for the info. Interestingly enough the KBB value is $15,xxx and the NADA is $17,xxx.

While the kbb price may be interesting, also take a look at AutoTrader.com. That will give you a good idea of what comparable vehicles are available in your area, and at what prices. There are lots of upgrades that make trucks more expensive.

As for price haggling, just remember that there is probably no legal requirement for them to give you a deal with the bad engine. They may be granting you the $2K to keep a good business relationship with you. You have to decide how much haggling is worth improving/degrading your work relationship with these folks. For example, if they leave happy with the transaction, do they give you more hours to make up the cost difference? Or if they are annoyed by how you handle it, do they cut you back? Employee discounts are nice, just remember that they are intended to build the relationship between the company and employee so everyone is happier.

As far as use, I found that my 04 Access cab was too small for what I need it for. I needed the double cab to do what I want to do with the truck. It seems that regular cabs are perfect for work trucks with one guy who works with a partner sometimes. If you intend to be social, it can be a disadvantage.

With the regular cab I am x2 on the bed cover just so you have a place for everything from books to groceries to luggage that is protected from weather and secure.

Well guys here was about a $3,900 difference on top of the $6,800 remaining on my loan. Don't think I can justify that difference for a single cab base model. I'm going to keep my F150 and hope the problem doesn't develop to become more severe and keep my eye out for an access cab or double cab TRD. Thanks for all the help, hope to see you guys sooner than later!

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Supposedly banks go off nada and black book and kbb doesn't mean shit.

That's what the dealers and banks told me when I was shopping. Either its true or they didn't expect the nada value of my truck and my car to be more than 2k higher than the kbb each.

Also for the same price as a v6 supercharger more or less urd has the blower kit for the 2.7 that makes like 240 whp or something. If my 2008 wasn't such a pos I would have done that vs trading.

Fords aren't as terrible as everyone makes them out to be, but I'm still of the opinion that Toyota is better. Every brand will have it's own quirks and problems, including Toyota. But they there's a reason why people think of good resale value and dependability when it comes to Toyota.

Oh, and welcome to TW from VA!

    Yeah, no shit.

"OH NO, My car is accelerating uncontrollably! What can I possibly do to stop it, since shifting into neutral and applying the emergency brake is totally unthinkable! I'll just ride it out like an idiot and hope I don't crash, killing myself, my passengers, and anyone who gets in the way!"

The media grabbed onto that one and ran with it. Just like the "unintended discharges" associated with Remington 700's a couple years back.
