They made out big - getting a 1st round pick in 2014 and a 2nd rounder in 2015 with Moulson.

Isles paid huge for what seems to be a rental. Both Vanek and Moulson are UFAs after this year. I'm surprised those picks weren't conditional pending an extension to Vanek.

My consideration in reference to team chemistry and on ice production. IMO, Vanek is clearly a much better and more skilled skater than Moulson and stands a better chance of thriving with his new team. The Sabres are drowning, and Moulson may just join the drowning.

There may be more to this than we know as well. Perhaps Moulson had made it clear he was clear he was not coming back and the Isles are confident they can resign Vanek.
