Well guys, I'm a bit lost on this issue and could certainly use some advice from someone who has a little bit more experience than me with dealerships.

All started out with the new Toyota of Clermont (FL) that opened a month or so ago sent out coupons for some little things, one of which was for free wiper blades. I figured I could stop by and kill some time while getting something for free. Great right? I go in and ask the service guy for the free blades and he suggests I also get the steering wheel spiral cable replaced because of a recall. I agree and go check out a new prerunner.

After a test drive I come back and the service guy tells me there had been a problem. The tech had let the wiper blade arm snap onto the windshield and sent up a couple nice 5 inch cracks going up. This is where it gets shady. The service guy tells me he wants me to call up my insurance company and tell them a rock hit my window and that I brought it to the dealership for it to be fixed. In return he would give me 50% off on some bullshit maintenance. I tell him that he is asking me to commit fraud with my insurance company and now he begins to get short with me. After agreeing to fix it themselves he pawns me off on someone else and refuses to talk to me. I'm waiting to get a call from them that my windshield is fixed but I still feel like they still may try to screw me over. Anyone have any advice?

TL;DR- Dealership cracked my windshield and I'm sad.

    Thanks guys.

you need to call your insurance company and explain the situation to them, otherwise if you get nailed for fraud you will be in a whole world of hurt

Edit: also calling Toyota corporate would be a good idea

    What?

Why would he be in trouble for fraud if he didn't call his insurance company to make a claim?

Talk to the dealership manager and ask for corporates number. Be prepared with names.

No need to talk to the service guy anymore. Management is who you need to talk to now. If they jerk you, I agree with J11, call corporate. You may want to do that anyway, I'm sure Toyota doesn't want shady deals like this at their dealerships.
He asked you to commit fraud, unbelievable!

Also don't lie and say a rock hit it. Op should not have to use his insurance to fix something he did not break. The dealer should have insurance to cover that, if not they are in even more trouble and should be shut down.

Sounds more like a case of the service manager covering his Techs ass.

you really needed to make a thread to figure out this should be taken to upper management?

pretty sad that you had to ask.

Get names and report those shady bastards in writing. Start at the bottom and send the same, one, report to as high as you can.

And they wonder why they have a bad name. Wind shields are cheap man I don't get it.

    Best of luck.

This was my first trip ever to a service area of a dealership. I've also never bought from a dealership. From the stories I hear from other people I was almost expecting something like this to happen.

I'll be sure to call corporate just as soon as I find a number.

this, don't take their shit! Don't take any "deals" from the manager unless it's on top of them fixing it and then still call corporate.

So he wants the profit from your recall work, the profit from the YOUR insurance company replacing your windshield that THEY broke, AND you to pay him half the cost of any maintenance work you want after all this? He's got brass balls for days.
