Making Locker work in 2wd

I know about the grey wire mod on 1st gen tacomas. i was wondering if neone knew about a way to make the rear locker work in 2wd and hi4 in the 2nd gen tacos?

first i like to say this site is very helpfull. second quick question on this mod before i go cuting on wire under the dash. can anyone tell me if i got the right relay for this. its a radio shack 275-218. it is a DPDT just want to make sure. if so can yall give me a idea on the hook up on this one. im not that smart with elec. with this kind of setup. if it was just lights no problem. like were to start with this.

Yeah, looks like the one I used. Post up if you have any more questions. I may have put more details in the cheap/free mod thread in my sig. Took some experimenting on my part to get the right ends of the wires. Let me know! I can take some more pics if needed.

 

only problem is i can tell the differences in the two banks, but the order for example a, a1, and a2. and what goes into the coil. is the part that getting me. i just want to be sure so i dont mess anything up, of fry anything. if you can help on the order it would help alot.

What kinds of speeds are allowed with this mod. I understand off road, snow, ect. Just don't know if sustained higher speeds is recommended?

 

Use good judgment. There is no physical limit that will shut it off. But if you're running 80mph down the highway, do you really need the locker on? Or ABS disabled (because it's turned off when the locker is engaged)? It's just like a posi or solid rear axle. You can powerslide easily whether you want too or not. I've used it to slide around in mud, but I wasn't going mroe than 30mph if that. Snow is another matter. If you're off on a trail or in a field that's fine. If you're on a road where the back end kicking out can hit a car, slide off the road, hit a guard rail, etc then you need to be careful about it. It'll build up heat and stress on the tires, axles, gears, etc if you use it on anything other than a straight line. Toyota designed it to get you out of a situation where 1 rear tire is off the ground. Not run around 24x7 locked. So just keep that in mind.

The banks are identical. Two pins are for the coils (guessing the 2 rotated 90*), 12v and ground toggle both sides at the same time. Then each side has an input and 2 outputs to switch between. Look at the top of the relay for that schematic, and match it with the images in this or the cheap/free thread.

A and B are the 2 inputs, A1/A2/B1/B2 are the outputs that are switched.

That relay should be setup identically to the middle relay in the diagram above. Does that help?

The couple of issues I knew about were from incorrect modding. What have you heard?

 

It works great not one problem.Had a detroit in my 91 yota,I know when I need it! Best mod for the money and time, 10 bucks and a half hour.

 

Just one of the first people to do it had issues with 4wd or something... It was a while back since I stopped watching the thread. Looks like TN is finally back up so maybe I'll read through to see what the problem was.

i tryed this mod and now i have the abs,locker, and both 4wd lights on. i took the relay back off and wire it back together but still have the lights on. does someone have a idea what i did wrong. i know its in 2wd not 4wd like its said. i have unpluged the computer and the lights go off, but when i plug it back in the light come on again. any one have a clue whats wrong. i dont think i mess the 4wd ecu up or is it possable i did.

never mind it was just a stupid fuse blown. after about 3 hour redoing it all. its always the last thing you check.

 

I did the same thing! Redid all the wiring, then checked the fuses... d'oh!
