Bfg's A/T and towing a boat

This was cross posted in Towing as well but looking for more exposure as I need to make a decision today. Tks for the patience guys/mods.


Looking to throw on some BFG A/T's on my '09 LB Sport. Anybody tow a boat with these? I've heard the wet road abilities of these may be a little dicey and not sure how they'll handle on boat ramps? Really like the look but without 4x4 I need all the traction I can get. Don't want to be "that guy" at the ramps.

Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.

 

I'll check em' out Chris! Tks bud. I know it sounds ridiculous but I like the look of the bfg's. Just need to confirm practicality for my uses.

 

idk about boat ramps but in my 2WD in the rain....its drift day because im constantly sideways lol. been reading the duratracs have better wet road handling maybe try those?

 

Appreciate the input! Yea I've started reading a bit about the lack of traction on wet pavement. Something for me to think about for sure

 

Awesome tire that lasts forever (75k miles)... because of the hard compound.

I cant imagine you'll have an issue hauling the boat out of the water though compared to the other brands.

Worst case, air down at the ramp.

 

I tow a boat all summer, fish about 20 hours a week at various boat ramps, some paved, some not. I have the stock TRD offroad pkg with BFG AT's and rarely do I need to use my 4wd. My boat isn't very heavy, less than 1500 lbs though.

 

Yea I guess boat/trailer weight also plays a lot into it. Tks for the perspectives guys.

 

You should be fine with the BFG AT....... They have not let me down yet.

 

Never had an issue with BFG A/T's on the boat ramps I use. My boat/trailer/gear is right around 1200lbs. I use ramps from dirt to cement.

 

I've been running nothing but bfg a/ts on my trucks over the last 30 years... gone though around 5-6 sets of them. Like mentioned they last around 70,000 miles. I've never had a problem at boat ramps... allways done it in 2WD.

 

At the ramp, do you put it in lower gear? I normally use the 3 or 4th gear. One time I was lazy and leave it in D and my back tires were way in the water. The rear slipped and almost hit the side of the ramp.

I was told to turn on VSA. True?

 

Pushing the VSC button once is recommended for use on slippery boat ramps (at least with my 2007)... leaves VSC on, turns off trac and turns on Auto LSD. I've never had to do it or engage 4WD to pull the boat out. I've always left the tranny in the "D" position and never had a problem... dropping down to 3 or 4 is probably a better choice though.

 

I have never even slipped in my BFGs. All you have to do when exiting the boat ramp is, Hold the brake while giving it a little gas then release brake and you'll go right up. Most people let go of brake then hit the gas. That is only going to make you spin the tires. Seen a Titan keep spinning his tires because he did what most people do.

 

You'll be fine. Last truck was a Dodge 2500 with Cummins diesel. Hauled a 23ft pontoon boat up many boat ramps, with the Gobs of torque (easier to break tires free) the Cummins had and BFG ATs... I never had a problem pulling the boat out.

 

You might not even need to hold the brake. On my 07 the HAC assists when starting to move up a steep or slippery hill. Once your foot is off the brake it automatically holds the truck in place for 5 seconds... gives you plenty of time to get to the accelerator pedal without rolling backwards at all.

 

I'd vote for Duratracs. I loved mine when I had the Taco. Great in snow. Never had an issue with them on the boat ramp. Didn't do tons of off roading but they always handled everything great.
