Would it be safe to catch a foot or two of air with Icon Ext Travel coils in front and shocks in the rear? I'm looking at a 3" lift with the Icons (w new UCAs and new leaf pack) and am curious as to how far I can beat them.

Also, how much of a difference does a new leaf pack make? Could you simply "overhaul" the stock ones or would buying a whole new pack be night/day?

Tom beats his truck pretty well

And a full leaf pack is always gonna be better. IF no weight in the bed, a Deaver J66 pack is the way to go.

I know virtually nothing about aftermarket leaf packs and what options are available (not upgrading until the Spring, so really havent put much time into researching those yet). The truck is my DD, will see dirt, and I'd like to be able to beat it around a bit (driveways, speed bumps, off roading) without destroying anything. Also, while I don't have a job that requires the bed to be used often, I still plan on having it used a few times a year with the possibility of towing (light - jet skiis, etc) maybe once a year.

Any recommendations there? I'm figuring the Icon Exts + unibal UCAs are slightly overkill, but will allow me to play hard when I want to.. but I'm really unsure of what leaf pack to put in.

Ext. travel and UCA's up front for sure. Get that extra travel and strength.

On the rear. i would do the Deaver J66's and either the Icon 2.0 with resi's or the 2.5's in the rear.

You may see some negative reviews, but most of them are from users putting a decent amount fo weight in the bed and then beating on the truck. It kills the springs. But towing a trailer with jet ski's a few times a year is fine. Not like you are smashing through whoops with a trailer.

It's a good pack. We do them on a lot of trucks, Deaver also has an expo J66 pack, that's inteded for the guys who have a few hundred lbs in the back at all times (recovery gear, gas, ect..)

Will off the shelf 2.5's fit with the J66's or do you need to strap/have custom length 2.5s work

Would a "no armor (beyond Matt's 10g skid plate)" Taco be OK with the 650lb Icon springs? Would 600s give a smoother ride while still being able to be beat on?

Would there be any reason beyond being heavier up front to get the 700s?

I'm not even sure my truck will ever leave the ground and I'm not trying to destroy the thing. Really just asking these questions to gauge how much the Icons will put up with. In my day to day use I'm looking for something that is smooth and allows me to plow speed bumps and our stupidly deep Utah driveways without interference.

I have lots of open desert and Moab available to me. It would suck to be cruising at speed, catch a foot or two, and end up stuck out in the middle of nowhere because my suspension can't take it. From a beating perspective, I'm not really trying to take on anything that will tear up my underside / require me to have real armor - just another "gauging the Icons" sort of question.

I'm really eyeing up Matt's skid because I like the look. If I ever wanted to get into serious off roading then I'd look at a solid set of full armor.:D

Question: It seems that a lot of leaf packs offer a 1-1.5" lift, which doesn't seem that will be sufficient when the front end is lifted 3" - assuming you want the truck to be level.

Do the rear shocks themselves increase lift as well and then the leafs add to that? I had the impression shocks were just used for dampening and wouldn't necessarily "hold the truck up".

Your truck is normally nose down when stock. the 1.5" pack's level the truck when the front is set at about 2.5" of lift.

Would spacers be the only way to get the rear 3" up to be level with 3" in the front? Or do they make 2" packs?

Ultimately my goal is to do the 3" lifted, leveled truck.

To be level just do the Coilovers and a rear AAL. You will pretty much be at the 3" mark overall and level.

Have to think about the lift the bigger tire gives as well.

The only real rear options out there are 1.5 or 2.75-3"

    Don't over think it.

    http://sdhqoffroad.com/toyota-tacoma/

Most of these truck's are at about 2.75" of lift up front and a AAL or J66 pack in the rear.

Rear shocks absorbers in general do not add lift, there purpose is just to dampen the movement. Now in the case you instal a 2.5" diameter shock, these will add anywhere from 1/4" - 1/2" of lift due to the pressure they carry and the vehicle being light on the rear end.

I have aal in the rear with 5100's spacers on stock 884 springs and stock shock. Warn trans4mer with winch on the front and she is sagging somthing awful. I have reading a ton about coil overs for years ( building the bank to buy) and here I am still reading. This is allot of coin for one mod but I need to do it before my kidneys get to beaten up. I see the fox kit with uca's and an icon kit is here anywhere that will tell me the specified weight for each coilover, my front is crazy heavy with all the armor under and the mammoth bumper? Thanks guys both sets of shocks are in the cart just waiting to click buy.

You can probably get away with just changing your front spring out. Don't think you needa whole new coilover setup.
