Starting my SAS tomorrow on my 97 :)

So one of my friend's who owns a shop is selling me a pair of toyota axles. But these are not normal toyota axles, oh no no no. They are industrial land cruiser axles - basically taco sized Rockwell's. The vehicle these axles come on has on the serial number sticker a line that reads "This vehicle is an all terrain vehicle and as such, is not suitable or licensable for operation on public roads/highways."



The rear axle comes factory with a clutch driven LSD, and axles are geared to 4:30 again from stock. The only place in Canada that deals with these trucks is Saskatoon Industrial Toyota. Only rebuilding the axles need are Birfield joints in the front and pulling the 3rd's to clean them up.

Will be built with coilovers up front, 3 link with trac bar, and about 8" of overall lift, plus an extra 2" with the 35's for a total of 10" above stock.

So far the price list is as follows:
$1500 for axles, complete
$2000 for labour/parts to install
Coilovers: TBD
Tires have already been bought and paid for, already on the ifs, for now

I know there are threads of people saying "ima sas my taco for 2500-5000" and what have you, that is not the point of this thread.I just want to share with everyone the process of my trucks SAS. I'm getting a solid deal and should come in between $5000-$6500 cost, and doing everything the correct, quality way.

Will post pictures tomorrow of the axles and the truck they will be going on.

10" of lift on 35's is going to be RIDICULOUS. Pretty much like my truck with these pesky leafs I set up wrong... You'll be at 28" frame height on links... Were with 35s you should be roughly around 23" frame height and still have decent uptravel.

Where are you getting your steering box, heim joints, pitman arm, axle and frame brackets for links, frame reinforcement, shock mounts, steering shaft, bolts etc...

When you say axle is complete, does it include hysteer arms, steering linkage?

Sorry I didn't post yesterday, was at the shop till about 2am(only worked for about 4 hours though haha)

So we drug the front axle in, and i picked away at stripping it all off the housing.

Turns out the same calipers as stock on our trucks are the same on this axle
Short side birf + axle shaft

Because the front axle is passenger side input and my yota is driver side output, we will also be pulling the transfer case from the land cruiser and having an adapter plate made so we can use it. The rear axle is also passenger side input, so that will cause problems with the exhaust system. It is TBD how we will deal with that, but we will figure it out after the front is on and rolling.

SupraTT, in answer to your questions, Steering box, pitman, and brackets for links will be coming off the land cruiser, frame reinforcement will probably be the trailgear kit, shock mounts will be made in house custom, bolts are stocked in his shop as well. Heim joints are illegal in Canada. The steer arms that it has now will be what we use. The linkage came with the axle as well but we realized that its bent so rather than straightening it out we will be purchasing a new one.

You say quality, and the right way; yet you are re-using everything that was made over 30 years ago...

Heim joints are illegal everywhere, only on steering linkages; which not one person ever abides by that since no cop in the world knows the difference.

If you are performing a 3 link, you will need to lop them radius arm brackets off and create your own 3 link with coil overs.

Using the stock arms and knuckles is going to get really tricky as the tie rod is behind the axle and therefor it will be difficult to land the steering box and draglink behind the axle... this will not work. Also, please post a photo of the steering box.

Axles look great, and I am looking forward to seeing this work out. But I just want to inform you on this stuff as people assume a SAC is just cut shit off put shit on... Much more is involved. Truck looks good too, and I'd guess you only have about 6" of lift in the rear. There is not 12" there. Measure your frame height just in front of the front leaf spring hangers under the cab.

 

We understand that it is not plug and play. The donor truck is a 2001, so 12 years old as opposed to 30.

I live in Manitoba, and heim joints are illegal on every aspect of the vehicle. If we could use them we would.

We have two options with the 3 link. Either making a sub frame for the stock arms or make a custom set up. We are leaning more towards the custom, the first option was just what we had discussed prior to looking too heavily into the topic.

The beautiful thing about the steering knuckles is they are reversible. The major down side to the front axle is the steering arms are on the bottom and raise to about mid axle. There is a kit to switch the steering to the top, but we are shooting to use the stock arms as they will be adequate for the intended purpose.

We got under the donor truck today and found out that the steering box has been removed - my guy doesn't remember removing it, so we are thinking someone jumped his fence and stole it.

Also realized that my comparison measurements for my trucks height have been compared to my dads 03 DC PreRunner with sagged springs. Measurement is 25"(this will increase when the front goes up, may not be much but it will)

First time I have ever heard of a 8" high pinion lc80 axle called a toyota rockwell. Its a friggin 8". Doesnt matter what it came out of. Its an 8" or a 9.5" thats all they came with. And you better look into hellfire knuckles for highsteer and longfields if youre actually gonna wheel this thing.

You don't actually realize that there's a difference between a regular LC80 series and an industrial one made by the industrial side of toyota.

How's about you go play in traffic and wait until the finished product to pass judgement?
