    Also, when I watched the scene where Rick killed Shane, and then waited with him for a while before Carl appeared, I took that there was an elapsed time period. Minutes, hours, not sure. But it wasn't instant that Carl was on Rick after Shane had been killed.

    What I gathered (could be wrong) Rick killed Shane, weeped over killing his best friend, mean while Carl heard gunshot, weaseled his way out of the Farm House somehow and wandered up to Rick and Shane, start reanimation.

    Rick stabbed Shane, but Shane fired his gun and Carl came to investigate. The gunshot is also what caught the attention of the horde that raided the farm.

    The horde turned 90 degrees and went towards the sound of the gunshot in that episode
