This is a customer image on Amazon. I've seen this picture on here before, but not sure if this is someone on here or not.

I'm rocking a plastic case and some ammo cans. Everything fits under the tonneau cover.

Get a camper shell and double your capacity. A short bed with tonneau has about as much storage as the trunk of a Camry.

I tried many setups for working in construction with my shortbox... toolbox, tonneau cover, softopper. Nothing beats a fiberglass shell for dry lockable storage, unfortunately they are the most expensive option but super handy.

I am in the same field. Civil. I just traded in my AC for a DCLB. In the AC I used corrugated mail boxes in the back seat. Now I am trying to figure out how to keep it all in the bed.
I have a fiberglass cap with win-doors and a trac-rack roof rack that is very stout. Love that cap! I have attached an ammo can to either side of the bed at the bed rail, and they slide up and down the rail. I use those for paint cans, tapes, pull strap, and other smaller items. I have the two corrugated mail crates against the back of the bed with a 5 gal bucket in between them, all held in place with a load bar. But those action packers look like they may replace these some day.

I have an undercover tonneau and I can't even get the cover closed with standard sized coolers. You would be surprised about what items are too tall.

For those interested.. I found a solution to my problem. (it may not work for you depending on how often you haul large things/you may just not like it.)

I ordered a UWS TPC42W tool chest from Amazon for $267.00 shipped. I have amazon prime though so it would be a little more without it. Anyways, I did a little research and measuring, and found that this chest would work to fit under my Access Lorado Tonneau, and still be functional. The manufacturer specs read 42" wide and 17 3/4" tall. Measuring the truck gave me 43" between the wheel wells and 18" to the bottom of my Tonneau rails. Needless to say it fits like a glove.

I called UWS and they recommend for these type of chests to bolt straight down into the floor of the bed, but I didn't want to drill into the bed of a new truck and I want it pretty easily removable for when I need to haul something large. I made my own mounting bracket out of 1/8" thick steel and some 3/8" bolts and it bolts directly into my factory bed rails. The box is a little deeper than I had thought, but its ok. Still leaves me about 3.5' to haul my usual load for work consisting of hoses, pipe, and other things of that nature and if needed I can pull it out by myself in under 10 minutes. I think it looks great, and with the Tonneau closed, you would never know it was even there.

Is the lid taller than the cab when open fully ?

Wondering if that box would work inside my cap

It looks like it'll depend on how much your cap curves in at the roofline. With the lid of the chest fully open, it's about even with the bottom of the third brake light and it's narrower than the rear window of the can, but because the roofline curves there may be a problem with the corners of the lid hitting the inside corners of your cap. If you lived closer I'd say we could jest meet up and try it out. Haha

Let me know if you need more/different pics or measurements.

    Haha woo thanks!

If you're unsure about that box though checkout the UWS TBS54SPLA too. It's a typical crossover box, but it's made for a step side ford ranger. It's what I was originally looking a at.. It's 54" wide and the short bed is 55" wide, and the deep part of the box fits like a glove between the wheel wells. Only reason I didn't end up with it is because the rails for my tonneau wouldn't have allowed the lid to open all the way.

It's also about $20 more and isn't quite as big, but would still be a great, useful setup IMO.
