I would not call that body work, its just truck frame, I does not have to look perfect. It is ton of wire brushing, sanding, cleaning, degreasing and painting. It consumes a lot of time, so imo it would cost too much to pay someone to do it. It is a job that really sucks though.

So I spoke to the original owner that bought it in 2004, and sold it in June....he says he never got a letter from Toyota about this rust issue.

If this is true, how was he to know there was an issue and to get it checked out before the 2011 deadline?

My frame is not all that bad, but I can tell it can possible become an issue in a few years.

So last post on this topic...for those that are listening. Toyota does not care the original owner never received messages or was told of the undercoating that needed to be done by 2011. the original took the truck in for ALL oil changes, brakes, inspections, etc...and was never once told of the rust issue.

So I conveyed this to the Toyota Rep and he simply said I'm sorry. I then said fine, can I at least get a dealership to look at the frame rust, and inspect it for me as a courtesy free of charge. He said no, they will charge me.....and silence.

    I have a '96 tacoma, 169 360km approx.
now inoperable solely due to the rusted frame.
I am not the original owner therefore never received any notifications.
does anyone think I am still eligible?
head office doesn't think so, local dealership never called back, emailed customer service management last night, no reply as of yet.
any information, advice &/or suggestions welcome!
I need to know before I let it go for $1200!!!
    thank you in advance!

sorry, but your window of opportunity ended in 2011. A dealership can do nothing for you, it is up to Toyota Corp.

if everything else on the truck is good, and you want to keep it, find a good frame from a junk yard in the southwest and swap frames.

I just Emailed Toyota corporate about my truck.. going to see if my VIN still applies for the warranty and if so I might be shipping my truck back to the states for the buy back.

here's hoping.. see my gallery for the perforation!

Yes, I understand that now. I just wish the original owner had done the warranty work...but as I stated he never was notified. It's a 2004, barely 9 years old.

No. They won't budge, they would not even let me escalate this to a supervisor. Yours is a 99, no way it's covered

What do you all think a 98 extended cab 4x4, 2.7cyl, auto, with a swiss cheese rusted frame is worth? other problems: needs exhaust parts, shocks, broken leaf spring, bent bumper, warped brake drum in the rear. wondering how much I should try to get trading it in or selling it on my own.

Looks like the original owner got it sprayed on time, so I'm gtg if any claims are in line by 2017 correct?

it seems they would rather save money and fight us, and have a bad name, and go out of business

So I really got under there today when putting on my trailer hitch...it's not too bad, and one of the guys at my station who was helping me is a rust expert...he's working on his rusted out Chevy Blazer.

he said not to worry, and just to start taking the rust off with a wire wheel and drill. Started doing that today and it'll be fine. Just have to do it a little bit at a time. Most of it is in the back near the tire carrier.

of course, but not on the frame, its a road killer, they made it, my 94 with 300k on it is still perfect on the frame the body is shot, which i can accept, that's why i bought the low millage 96, and now found out it not made from the same good steel on the frame

Mine is currently being inspected, should know something this afternoon, and I'm going with them telling me it's fine after getting under it and looking at it more closely. Hopefully it'll last many more years, but I plan on having it inspected every year until the warranty expires in 2019 for my truck.

Picked the truck up this afternoon. Service guy told me that if it was his call, he would replace the frame, but he's not sure what Toyota will say. Should hear something from them in 3-4 days and will update then.

I had a tough time finding info on the corrosion buyback process and just got it all finished so I figured I'd chime in here.

I had a 1999 Tacoma base model that was purchased in Denver. I took it in for a check at a Toyota dealer and its frame was so rusted out they told me I should call a friend for a ride home. I had my wife come get me, and the next day Toyota hooked me up with an almost-new Corolla rental. They called back about 2 weeks later and offered me well over 150% of the KBB value for it, so I went out and bought a new 2014 Tacoma I'd had my eye on and returned the rental. Pretty sure they would have let me keep it for 2 more weeks and the Corolla was a nice little car but I didn't want the extra liability of having it in my driveway. Toyota's check covered taxes, registration, and provided a very nice down payment on the new one.

Two weeks after that the Toyota rep gave me my check and I signed the old rustbucket over to them, and that's that. If you want the long version of the story, look here:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/new-members/318526-howdy.html#post8294419

Here's what I learned from the whole thing:

    - If your frame is badly perforated with rust, just because everything seems fine right now it does not mean it is safe to drive your vehicle. If you're in a wreck and don't have an intact frame to protect you, you will be hamburger.

    - If your pickup was purchased in a place that uses a lot of road salt and you haven't been extremely proactive with preventative maintenance, you're probably eligible.

    - It wasn't a recall per se, more of an extended warranty. For mine, it was 15 years past the date the vehicle entered service. I was only 2-3 weeks away from going past my warranty when I found out!

    - Some people were saying that they didn't go in around 2008 to get the undercarriage treatment and so their extended warranty was voided. I never did this (didn't even know about it) but it wasn't a problem with my claim. They never even mentioned it.

    - If they buy your vehicle back, don't forget to take your old plates off! I had just paid my yearly registration but I forgot to get those plates so I'm out that money for the year. It was less than $100 so I'm not real upset, but I wish I would have grabbed those plates.

    - You'll need a copy of your title so if you're eligible for the buyback, start hunting that thing down

    - You can't have any outstanding leins against your title

    - If you drive on road salt on a regular basis, you need to keep a good undercoating or keep that stuff washed off. I did a ton of research and I'm going the Fluid Film route for my new truck. I got 2 pairs of rhino ramps, a small pressure washer, and a fluid film application kit so every spring I'll clean it off really well, then soak it in fluid film every fall. It looks like a huge PITA but it also looks like the best solution if I want to keep my truck on the road for 20-30 years.
