will mufflers get better with age?

i just put the flowmaster super 40 series muffler on my 4 banger, and it really isn't that loud i was just wondering if it will get any louder at all as time goes on

 

no it wont change

 

i believe they will, depending on the packing

 

almost all of the time once the are "broken in" normally after about 1k miles they do become louder.

what kind of series 40? i have a super 44 and what the shop did was cut out the 2.5"outlet and put a 3" outlet and my 4 banger is loud as hell now.

 

i don't have the flowie, but mine sounds like it has gotten deeper with age.

 

Not to try to take over your thread here but how loud is it now. i cant decide between the 40 50 or 44 delta flow flowmasters. i wanted the 40 at first but thought they might be to loud so then i considered the 50 but your saying the 40 isnt all that loud. does anyone know that the dbs (or sound reading level think i dont know the correct word)

no prob man. and to answer your question, yes most mufflers will mellow out with age. however, you do realize that the flowmaster mufflers are not going to give you any significant gain in hp or throttle response. the reason being is they are a straight through baffle design. Flowmaster builds exhausts for sound mostly. not for performance.

 

i got the fm super 40, but i kept the stock inlet/outlet so i was able to use the stock tailpipe. i was reading threads before i got the muffler and they all said the super 40 was ridicously loud, but after me and my buddy welded it on (im trying to learn how to weld), it didn't sound all the loud...i was hoping for really loud, so i just hopes it gets louder with age

 

i thought the 40 was going to be real loud, but it wasn't what i expected. its much quieter, but hopefully it does get a bit more distinct, i don't have any decible reading or anything though

 

ok i bet its because you used the stock tailpipe on the outlet. so i guess i will do the 50 delta with 3inch exits. or maybe the 40 Series Delta Flow i cant decide

I have the FM 50 and dumped right past the rear axle. Honestly it gets on my nerves on the highway. Damn drone.

 

i dont plan to drop it after the axle though.

i just cant decide, i dont now if the 50 will be too quiet or if the 40 will piss the parents off.

if sounds is what your looking for and to piss off neighbors. run DT headers gut your cats and FM 40. itll be crazy loud

well then just run a 40 series OR you could go witha magnaflow. they do great on 4 cyls
