howzit fellas (and ladies). im looking for non biased feedback on my next vehicle (dd). i just sold my 04 g35 and in the process of selling my 13 xb that i use as my daily driver. i already have my preapproval for 30k and was wondering what i should go with. i have the list shorted down and kinda have a choice that more than likely gonna go with, but i would like to hear what other people would go with. mpgs is kinda important to me since i do a lot of running around; unfortunately 97% of the miles racked is city miles. on my xb i usually put around 8 gallons and that will last me about a week (180-190 miles). additionally, i like the utility of having cargo space since i do have kids and one of them is active in sports. to me the xb is a pretty good car and it fills driving duties pretty good. one gripe i do have is that, where i live, it turns into an unpaved road to get to my house, its not a terribly far drive to my house, but i can tell from when i got the car till now, i can feel the suspension taking a toll. quite sad honestly.

so the vehicles i had in mind were:
    2014 rav4 limited awd
2014 tacoma prerunner trd sport (double cab short bed)

as you can see one has full anemities couple with awd and one is a bonafide truck with four doors. i really liked the rav cause the easy to clean softtex seats, reclineable backseat for my kids comfort, dual climate, auto rear hatch, six speed auto trans, greater fuel efficiency than the xb, and cargo space equivalent to xb. i liked the tacoma, cause i have a familarity with it, it fills in every notch that my truck doesnt (double cab, 2wd, automatic), and cargo space greater than that of the xb.

if you have a choice to pick between these for a commuter which would you pick? as a side note, i do still have my 2013 tacoma (trd OR 4wd) and 2013 4runner (sr5 premium 4wd), but my tacoma is my toy and wouldnt relegate it to daily duties and the 4runner is my wifes ride.

Unless it snows on Hino, you don't need AWD in the Rav4.

The Rav is a great vehicle, and the new ones are large enough for a small family, but it's an SUV. Do you need a truck or an SUV?
Under the body, the Tacoma is a full-framed truck.
The Rav is a unibody based on the Corolla platform.

rich: thats kinda the reason why i liked the rav. its a small suv (based on corolla plat). hilo does rain; it rains A LOT. i think this probably one of the rainiest cities on earth lol.

The new Rav4 is based on the Camry platform and I would steer clear of it since it has fake leather in the higher end trims. Go with a scion FRS or a Subaru BRZ both are fun cars and get good mileage.

Having a full frame sells me every time. (though it be C channel and not fully boxed :( )

I'd go with the prerunner tacoma. It'll last longer than the rav4.

I also have to inquire...why would you need an AWD rav4 but only a 2wd tacoma? Also, would you be keeping the current tacoma or trading it for the rav4/tacoma?

Personally a truck is usless to me with out a transfer case...UNLESS you're going strictly for fuel economy.

My thoughts mirror those shared by Rich, if only between the two, cute ute or truck?

I believe for the tasks you discuss both are good choices.

mgm: thats a very good choice if i was single with no kids ;).

ar15: the rav i went with awd just because, i figure if i was getting the top of the line rav, might as well throw the awd dynamic in there aw well. the tacoma i wasnt really concerned about mainly because i have 4wd on my other tacoma and the 4runner. in the event i would need it, i could use my other truck. this truck would be my every day driver and so im inclinded to go without 4wd. in all aspects, the truck is gonna remain completely stock.

I see the rav4 logic there...okay cool, i could see myself doing the same.

Another point i might mention...if you have two tacomas....you have double the parts....in the even that you like something better (aesthetically) from the prerunner, you can switch it to your Off Road tacoma.

Dent the bumper on your offroad, swap it to your daily driver prerunner.
I'd be pretty psych'd about that.

If you already have a 4x4 Taco and are keeping it, then go with the Rav.

ar15: one thing i "failed" to mention. i have several tacoma parts from my taco and 4runner leftovers LOL. anywhere from wheels and tires, to icon shocks and ucas. i can already tell its gonna be hard to keep it stock, so for that reason, even more i want the rav. souping this truck up is going to defeat the pupose! LOL.

OP, why not trade in your current tacoma for the new one you want (double cab sport) and get 4wd. My double cab prerunner sport got the same gas mileage as my current 4wd. Unless your more concerned about racking up the miles. But this option would save you money.

usa: in the end, i cant. i dropped a lot of money into my tacoma. for me to trade it in wouldnt fair well on my end. im ok with keeping my truck. it was money well spent (to me) cause i made it exactly how i wanted it. its easier for me to get rid of my current daily that trying to sell my toy.

    RAV-4 hands down

Small family to tote around;enclosed rear hatch that will carry everything from groceries to toys, pets, coolers and anything else kids need..

Nice enough to grab Mom for a nice dinner out while someone cares for above kids and AWD adds that adventure too continue that date to anywhere her mind lets you go..islands have many areas like this, no..

We tried the 2 truck idea and while fun it lost its appeal quickly...
Have fun making your decision and good luck...;)

snoope: thanks! trust me, the appeal of having that second tacoma is there. i wouldnt even mind it actually. just from my calculations, it would be an extra 60-75 dollars a month if i used the new tacoma EXACTLY how i use my xb and i dont mind that (im saying that now) because i love the tacoma. with the rav, gas efficiency is greater, so my gas bill would be less and you would be cruising in creature comforts galore LOL. with all that being said and everything else aside. one thing i found out about the rav and i thought it was pretty cool was, the rav has a center diff lock. so as we know, ravs are predominately fwd (just like any other crossover suv) until the car detects spinning then power is transfered to rear axels. with the rav you have a locker, so you can in essence have true all wheel drive (think subaru). also when sport mode is on, power is actively being transfered to rear wheels for greater steering and handling ability (it think it was a 90/10 power distribution).

Well...sure sounds like Rav4 is the best way to go. Just for god's sake, don't lose your mind and get rid of the current taco.

I don't see the use of a Tacoma and . . . another Tacoma, personally. The Rav makes more sense as a family commuter between the two.

Although were I you I would get something used, like a 06-08 Subaru Forester, or a similar Honda CRV or Rav4 or the like. Would fit your purpose well..

Sounds like a great suggestion for someone who is looking for a family vehicle with cargo space.

That can handle some rough terrain.
