What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

It should say I'm in Iowa... I'm still working on the reception. It's good when the antenna is loose, but when I tighten it down the reception goes in the shitter. I'm not sure what the deal is, but I'm going to get a nut for the threaded rod so the antenna bottoms out before it is tight to the mount. It must ground out weird on the chrome ring or something.

 

jesus for the price might as well opt for the extended travel ones and get UCAs for mid travel. I know Cody runs the extended ones and so does Tony(SupraT)

 

put new bulbs in the headlights. sylvania zxe bulbs. i like them. I just need to set my headlights properly now watched a few youtube videos.

 

Raptor lined the bed today. It turned out pretty nice! I'll take a pic tomorrow

 

Thats the plan, but I'm not ready to take the truck down for an entire weekend to do the 63" swap just yet. I figured I'll stack a few more leafs to gain a couple inches and match the 5100's up front. In the meantime I'll gather what I need to do the 63" the right way. You know... yank the bed, box & plate the rails, weld in shock crossmember, frenched hangers, long shocks, shackles, U-bolt flip, etc etc etc.

What are you running for shocks?

I have 5100's and eibachs up front, 5125's out back. Pulled the leafs from a junkyard for $50 and have maybe another $100 in metal that I used to fab spring hangers, box frame, upper crossmember/shock mount, lower shock mounts. Knocked it out in a weekend. If you check out my build thread I took lots of pictures and detailed the process pretty good. I can answer it questions it doesn't too

The only thing I have left to finish the rear is move my shock mounts up, bump stops, remove overlaod, shim the axle, 6" shackles and creeper hangers. And I have 12" 5125's.

When do you want to take the Tercel offroading?

 

My understanding is that when you lift your truck, the sway bar is even more important to help prevent rollovers/instability in the event of a sudden swerve at speed for instance.

Is my understanding borked? I've got Eibachs now and seem to remember someone suggesting that removing the sway bar would soften the ride a little.

 

No sway bar with Eibachs is much better. Allows the coils to do their job better. Doesn't feel like it's going to roll at all in tight turns.

 

An IFS doesn't react like a solid front axle. It has two short lever arms, each tied with a spring and a fixed pivot point instead of 1 long lever arm tied by 2 springs.

1. Tying the two sides together of an IFS with a sway bar makes the two sides less independent.

2. Typically, lifting an IFS uses stiffer springs than stock which will stiffen the front end, reducing the body roll experienced with stock coils.

Removing the sway bar will allow each side of the IFS to work truly independent, so pot holes and the like won't transmit across the entire front end. However, taking the sway bar off is defeating a safety feature and done at your own risk.

Huh...well maybe I'll try removing it then and see how it feels - that looked simple enough. I can always put it back on.
