Would it possibly be this washout? If so the Tacoma handled it stock, no lift.

 

There are a few of them on 38, if it seemed sketchy I don't think this is the one he's talking about. Obviously it could be, but if I had to guess, there is one that is in a bend of the road where a stream runs through a massive culvert. I've got some pictures of the one I'm referring to, I'll have to find them.

I think we are referring to the same spot. If you look at my post #28, I have this pic of a culvert in stream:

That was a cool trail. I posted a picture of the shooting targets I saw near the end of the road

 

Assuming we are talking about the same spot, it gave me a bunch of pinstripes near the top of the hill. Very overgrown but pass-able as of 2 years ago.

 

It's all coming together now, we are referring to the same place, it just didn't look like it to me from your first picture. This one of the culvert is definitely the same place though. Did you cross the water to get by it?

I found one of my pictures and it was 3 years ago that we were there, summer of 2010. At that time, there was no way to get around the washout, and not far past it the road was completely overgrown. Now I want to go back!

 

I was just there a couple weeks ago... easy crossing, but so over grown past the creek that its not worth it. I went maybe 1/4 mile further before it just wasn't worth dragging my truck through the brush anymore. Fresh pinstripes for nothing...



Explored at little off FS65 off Hwy 2 on Sunday. About 2ft of snow up towards the top of Evergreen Mountain. It was snowing hard on and off all day.

 

I did cross the water. The rock wash in my post #28 was just after you crossed over the stream with culvert. Cool spot - if I go back, I'll bring some tools to help maintain the trail.

 

FYI, you can get hit with a fine by the FS for performing trail maintenance without approval, you can only really cut up downed stuff. It's total BS crap but thought I'd give you the heads up.

 

It's a liability thing, u are supposed to be state certified to do anything like that and if u run a saw u are also supposed to have a state certified spotter...
Both of which I am/did not the other day...

 

Update on Grizzly T-slot nuts:

I have 2 of them holding my CB antenna and it doesn't move at all. So I was curious if maybe there was some variance to them. So I put one in the rail and low-and-behold:


Too tall Once I put on a fender washer to an eye bolt and a nut it was tight though:


But when I put on my quickfist it wasn't tight. It moved just a little bit but enough that I wouldn't be happy with it. So you basically have 3 options: A rubber fender washer between the rail and the regular fender washer, grind a little off the top of the T-slot nut, or not worry about it. I'm going to get the rubber fender washers tomorrow night when dad and I are making a Sears/Home Depot run. I'll reupdate after trying that!

 

The washout we're talking about is on 9020, which is the main road you take off 38, and looks like how you would get onto 110. It's definitely different than what's in your picture, I can see why you were sketched out...I'll go with you.

 

Good call I did not know that. I was thinking along the lines of pruning shears but I'm sure that would still be a violation. I'd feel pretty dorky getting written up with scissors. There's still the 'drive along and break off branches as you go' method!

Actually it goes more like, "if you don't fit reasonably, then the road is permanently closed to your class of vehicle until we maintain it."
This leads to roads that get reclaimed by nature and you can't (legally) do anything about it because FS doesn't have the manpower to do it and can't let decent citizens do it either.
I get what Tallon's saying, but seriously, I can't see why a few hours with a hedge trimmer would hurt anything
My personal opinion is that this is one of those laws where if you are reasonable person and go ahead with trimming, then it's going to take a really bored, really hardass officer to come along and write you up. Of course, I wouldn't try it in places like Capitol Forest. There's patrols waiting for you to do something simply because there's so many idiots screwing it up for the people who are meaning well.

You can't quite trust this BensonX character on the trail. He runs on the mentality that its 5 o'clock somewhere and provides a lot of peer pressure to consume beer with him...right Ben?

I won't say I am state certified, but I have 2 chainsaws, a gas can, a couple axes, and a few other such toys that on an early spring run may accidently fall into the bed of my truck.
