Anybody ever seen one in the wild. Here in north georgia you will hear of a "black panther" sighting occasionally. I dont believe there are any black panthers here, but maybe typical tan mountain lions in the mountains. If they are around I bet its only a few though.

Back in the 1970's, my family was on a trip in the mountains of Virginia and one ran across the road in front of our car. I think it was on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I've spent quite a bit of time in the NC mountains and have never even seen any signs of them. But then again, I've only seen one Bobcat up there too. I know there are lots of them around.

I'm in PA, just under the shadow of the Blue Mountain range. Supposedly there are Mountain Lions here but I have never seen any. Although at night you can sometimes hear animals making growling or howling type noises. I attribute those to Coyotes though.

The DEC claims there are none here in NY State. A lot of people claim they have seen them... I've never seen one personally but have talked with a few guys that are legit hunters and they swear they have. IDK...

The only "Black Panthers" are the political kind that originated in Oakland, California.

There has never been a black panther feline trapped or shot in the history of the U.S.

However, there are melanistic (black) leopards in Africa and melanistic Jaguars in South America, but even with those species you can still see the spots in their fur. Hence, they are not truly all black.

Haven't seen one for myself, but we have seen tracks. Friends have a couple plaster molds of tracks that were a few hundred yards from the house.

Cool that youv'e seen tracks in nc, thats close to georgia. People talk about sightings of black panthers mostly around me, but none have been hit by a car or attacked anyone like in california.

I have had two encounters. One hiking with friends growing up from a distance. It had the high ground, but too far off to worry.

Another was where I had regularly seen tracks while biking in Utah. One day I came around the corner and a mountain lion was right in front of me 20 yards away. My dog was with me and my first thought was to tell the dog to stay because she would have been a nice snack. I stood up on my bike to look bigger and let out my best growl and the Cougar went back into the brush. Let's just say I was a little nervous the rest of the ride about one jumping out at us and was cautious any time I took that trail from then on.

Beautiful animals. I had had friends tell me I am very lucky to have seen them in the wild where they have spent years tracking them and never had an encounter, but when you grow up in the mountains your chances go up.

I understand they hunt by two's. Recently my friends had seen one at night from 100 yards with binoculars while watching for coyotes, then he heard something to his side and saw another coming in on his flank from 30 yards. I don't think they were there for him but his coyote calls brought them in. It was a little too close for comfort and he let off a few rounds to scare them off.

We get pumas ad wolves coming down from the northwest occasionally here in MO, but I don't think our conservation dept thinks they're breeding here. More like displaced youth looking for territory. We also have bear coming up from the south & we just reintroduced elk to the state. Getting wilder here every year!

This 100% fact, and every one that's has seen one around here (N Alabama) claims it was a black one. Game and Fish say thier aren't any here.
