Your buddy makes some pretty good videos.

I did. There's a ton of stuff. For 1 year, he's pretty good. He's got a good eye for it-they flow well. My only comment is that the transitions are all pretty much the same-a minor nit.

There are days when I wonder how some LBS stay in business.

Went in to pickup some Shimano brake fluid. Guy is looking all over before going to the computer to see if they had it before telling me he had to order it. While he was telling me, I found what I needed.

All the stuff was right there, nicely laid out on the hanging rack which made it all the more frustrating cause the dude couldn't find it.

Isn't Shimano fluid just mineral oil? I wonder if the stuff from Walgreen's would work.

    I thought about that.

I watched a couple of videos and one or two of them suggested the possibility of differences in viscosity. I don't know enough to say whether that's true or not. Another suggested some might also have scents in the oil. No clue on that either-except I don't wanna smell like a French hooker going down the trail:puke:

I decided not to screw around

Well I figured I would start here, just moved to a Town that has hundreds of acres of state forest with miles and miles of trails. Walking and jogging is fine and dandy, but doesn't quite raise the adrenaline enough.

The plan is to save however much is needed over the winter and buy a nice mountain bike for trail riding in the early spring. Not looking to go over $1K but don't even know where to start! Would a full suspension bike be a better tool or does a hard tail work just fine for trail riding? There are very well groomed trails/fire roads mixed with quite rocky and aggressive trails.

Any input is more than appreciated!

Figure out what kind of riding you want to do and take it from there.
I went from a hardtail to a fs for more downhill control.
Once you figure out the terrain youll be riding mostly, you can better determine what type of bike you need. Check out pinkbike.com and the buy/sell section. You can find a great deal on a bike.

Yep Zach and talk to locals on what they recommend. A hardtail with 29" wheels is a good bet for starting out. If you plan on riding aggressive then likely you'll wanna pony up for full susp. At your pricepoint, FS will either be used or very low end components and heavy.

Zach, I have similar terrain out here in virginia. Went with a specialized rockhopper pro for about $1200. Good bike so far. I'm sure if I did more down hill riding I would have loved to get a full suspension. Also how much coin I spent was important.

So for doing a more all around trail type riding, a hard tail wouldn't be out of the question? I know a few of the local trails have some smaller jumps and I don't want to bust my ass too badly.

hardtail should be fine for light trail rides, even some rocky terrain. if you plan on going fast downhill i'd recommend a fs bike.
i sold my cannondale hardtail for $500 a year or so ago, so there are good bikes to be found if you take some time and look around. im on a specialized epic fsr now and the handling is night and day....definitely feel glued to the ground with the fs and the fox brain out back.
