i voted for access cab and straight axel. because thats the one i want.

BUT i will sign a petition for any combination of the litsted if it has a hope of working!

 

Diesel Tacoma would sell like crazy! If they priced it reasonably, but they will need some heavy duty upgrades to make it possible!

 

I'd buy the diesel...or a turbocharger 2.7 !!

 

Now we are talking. I love boosetd 4 cylinders. A turbo 2.7 would have great power, decent mileage when off boost and the ability to up the boost if needed.

Lots of automakers are turning to turbo's for economy as they are not always spooled, and you can have the best of both worlds. Great fuel economy and great power.

My old VW GLI got 35mpg on the highway at 65mph, and when I hit the gas it was very quick.

 

How about a diesel option and turbocharged 4 cylinder?

I think if I won the lottery like 500 million$ I would start a company contracted with Toyota and Mercedes or some other diesel company....order a bunch of taco's with no engine and then order a bunch of MIL-SPEC durable diesel engines, build a bunch of these trucks...and then sell them at regular Tacoma price, just to say: to all of these car companies who do not make or will not import these awesome vehicles that other countries have. So for a lucky few, I would burn half of my winnings, just to see something like this become a reality in the U.S...makes me sad

 

Its just not going to happen. The Taco is not an HD truck. The Tundra is Toyota's HD truck. If you look at sales figures over the recent years, excluding the HD market (again, of which the Taco does not belong to) diesel vehicles only amount to .8 percent of sales. Less than 1%. There is just no market for it. Yes its a huge desire to the dieselphiles on TacomaWorld but less than 2% of Taco owners are enthusiasts and even know this forum exists so we are not an accurate refletion of the average Taco owner.

 

Why not something everyone needs, like putting a frame under them that doesn't look like Swiss cheese in 5 or more years.

Wait till those people find out the new Tacoma they just bought is rusted out in the frame, and not covered under guarantee.

 

Except that in other countries diesel tacomas (hilux) are more the norm than gas...plus there is a huge interest in the new ram 1500 diesel that is also not a hd truck... find a niche to innovate and buyers will come

 

There's always huge interest in everything the US pumps out of thier chinese parts assembly factories and stamps new on. Then the reality of what buying "american" means when the resale value comes around.

I would love a diesel tacoma as would others but as it proves daily the market is stupid and the majority of the people buying cars and trucks are also stupid.

Why else would the f150 shitbox still sell 4x more than the tacoma.

The market wants the idea of trucks.. but very few people seem to actually want trucks and they complain about every truck related character of the trucks they buy so now we get lower softer trucks withless payload and smaller beds. But they come with more creature comforts than ever! The offroad aspect is just as much of a gimmgimmick that most of the owners buy because its cool or fadish and then they mall crawl it.

Might as well love the tacoma we have the next-generations will likely get worse

And you'll find out that the school you finished was designed to leave you in the dark. Toyota will love to sell you only diesel trucks if you-re heart desire.
But in this country we have a congress, each of these congressmen have
districts with deferent interests, than you have Petrol companies with their own interests, and finally we have people who do not understand how this world turns, and call themselves the smartest, wealthiest and healthier people in this world, and I have news for you, none of the above is true.

I am big diesel fan, but right now (at least here in NH) diesel is selling at about 20% higher than regular. That's the equivalent of my 20 mpg Tacoma getting 24 mpg for comparison sake. This means the diesel Tacoma would have to get better than 24 mpg on average to be worth the extra diesel cost. I don't believe that on routine driving the diesel will return much better mpg. Yes on a strict highway trip in hot weather I suspect 28 mpg will be found, but for daily driving, especially in the cold weather, I bet the diesel will be around the 22-24 mpg mark. So just in a fuel cost comparison it may not be worth it.

In addition, the extra cost of diesel maintenance and oil changes with special diesel oil and blue tech fluid will also be a big cost factor. You can also expect a big premium for the engine which will be sold only on the highest end models (that's what other manufacturers do now). This all means that you will never get your investment back if you don't drive the truck over many hundreds of thousands of highway miles.

 

How would a diesel not return good MPG in city?
A flatter torque curve (say peak torque (251 lb·ft)) at 2800 RPM) (vs the 1gr that puts out 278 lb·ft at 4,000 RPM) you get the torque sooner with less throttle (burned fuel) meaning better efficiency by not winding up the motor to get the torque.

And diesels all the emissions stuff is just junk, as long as you have cats you're good, no need for the DEF.

 

Just playing devils advocate here for a second. The problem is that the EPA has screwed the pooch in the diesel world. It is just like in the late 70's and 80's when cars were loaded with emissions crapola and vacuum lines. the performance and milage took a serious nose dive. Pan ahead to 2007, the Epa restrictions on diesels set in, now we have trucks that have egr and dpf, newer diesels running on urea, all have effected the performance and milage of these vehicles, as well as the longevity of the engines. The reason you are not seeing the toyota hilux diesel version is because the engines will not pass CAFE standards or meet the EPA requirements for clean air vehicles. Not that toyota and other foreign auto makers can not meet these standards, but they do not care to spend the money to do so because the return is just not big enough for them to compete in the north American market.

I have had 5 different diesel Rams, a 97 12 valve with 5 speed nv4500, awesome truck, clicked 23 mpg on the highway in a 8000 lb 4x4 with 35" tires, 2000 and 2001 24 valves with nv 5600 6 speed 4x4 and 35's, clicked 22 mpg. 2007 5.9 4x4, clicked 16 mpg. 2010 6.7 4x4, would not do better then 13 mpg. see the pattern. Not to mention 10 years ago diesel fuel was 40-55 cents cheaper then 87 octane, not today, it is higher then super.

The reason the cummins engine was punched out to 6.7 from 5.9 was to get more displacement for higher HP. But after the smog crap on the engine, the dyno shows that the 6.7 does not put out any more hp then the 5.9 cummins.

Now, a tacoma regular cab long bed 4x4 with solid axle up fron t and a cummins 4bt under the hood and i am there.

 

The 2.5D-4D in the current hilux is rated at 42.8 US-MPG Highway.

 

I don't know where those numbers came from, but I find them hard to believe when a TDI Jetta which is only FWD and weighs at least 1500 lbs less only is rated at about 45

 

The hilux doesn't have all the american emissions shit on it. That's why. It would get probably 30MPG if you put all that stuff on the D-4D. Guys with TDis buy an emissions delete kit and get an extra 5-10mpg or something like that.
