I know, that's why I asked...I thought maybe he was the mod I was thinking of and is not a mod anymore.

With all of your profound wisdom, not a one of you Taco Truck Drivers has a lens to sell. Sure I took it in the shorts from this Cop with a hardon for someone that works for a living, {not making others miserable}. This infraction is hardly worthy of law enforcement's time.
I thank those whom offered up the statute dictated by an out of control government. I found this lens is sold not by itself but only as a unit for $130.00. I call that getting banged! Thanks again, Catch you in the rear view mirror.

Vehicle safety regulations are an example of an out of control government?

Are you serious? How is that hardly worth it? Third brake lights are required for a reason. Say you have a car behind you that is blocking your regular taillights and then another car behind that, and you start braking...what happens then?

Just because you "work for a living" (don't most people?) you think you shouldn't have to follow all laws? Grow up, fix the cover, or buy a new one dude.

Understand you're not directing this towards me. And I'm NOT a cop hater/basher.

But unless I'm not able to call the police, in which case it won't matter, handling a problem myself is exactly what I plan to do.

ON TO THE CENTER HIGH MOUNT BRAKE LIGHT.

As far as the CHMBL I'm neutral. Studies suggest it provides around a 4.3% reduction in the chance of being rear ended. I'm sure more than a few of us remember seeing them the first time and they stood out...then. The effectiveness over time has been reduced. Additionally, they have shown almost statically a zero percent (0%) reduction in fatal accidents. The pay back is strictly in reduction of property damage. Where the ROI is around a 1 to 3 ratio. In other words, if the CHMBL cost $1 to install across the entire fleet of cars and light trucks in the US they would save about $3 in damage. On the grand scale they offer effective if not significant (relative to the GDP) reduction in cost.

Other factors considered in terms of effectiveness, are time of day and your location. The CHMBL is more effective at night and away from automated traffic signals. I'm unaware of any studies showing reduced or compromised lighting of the CHMBL such as the unit the OP has/had. My guess would be minimal.

    Similar to DRLs.

When DRLs were introduced, they made a difference.
People quickly became used to them, and they have actually "detuned" people to recognize that "daytime headlight = motorcycle".... motorcycles are now back to being just as invisible as they were prior to full-time headlights becoming law.

But what I'm seeing now bugs the hell out of me... and I'm seeing it on a LOT of Toyota drivers (and others, not only Toyota)....

Car heading down the freeway at 5am when it's pitch black.
NO running lights on any corner.... but DRLs, and passing them, seeing the dash lights on.

When I was learning to drive, my mom said that it was illegal to drive with just the parking lights because that turned your dash lights on, and you could not easily tell whether your headlights were on or not.
Now, I know that's not the reason, but she was right.
I don't have DRLs on my Taco, but when I first got the truck, there were a few times that I caught myself getting on the freeway in the morning with my headlights off. I quickly learned that the little green lightbulb means the headlights are on.

IMHO, if auto makers are going to move toward a cluster that is lighted 24/7, they should be required to provide fully automatic headlights.

I see exactly the same thing Rich. Working the shift I do especially during this wonderful time of year I drive very little during daylight hours.

It's actually ironic that by law We The People have created a system that requires an essentially ineffective center high mount brake light while at the same time, through another poorly implemented and ill conceived law, lull people into thinking their lights are on. So in "our" effort to save us from ourselves we've created a system that garners more drivers without tail lights in dark or other low visibility situations.
