    I am. Next year I'll be commuting to work + Mt Hood Community College and it'll be too costly gas wise. Want something comfortable, good on gas and moon roof for my little girl since she loves the one in her grandmas rav4

    Is it? I've never put much thought into it.

    Ideally, that's where I'd want to be also without financing but I don't want to buy a car with 150,000+ miles. Figure if I spend a little over $200/mo I should be OK unless if insurance skyrockets then it'll be a different story.

    Ive done the math and for my situation having the Civic as my DD is not saving me money really since the extra cost of insurance and maitinence adds up. But damn is it nice to park in whatever spot I want at work lol. If I had a much bigger commute daily, then yes probably well worth it.

    I second the guys who say keep the truck. I think if you were to write down on paper how much it costs to fuel/maintain/insure your truck, then compare that to the price of fuel/maintain/insure AND buy a separate vehicle, you would find that driving your truck will cost less.
    My advice would be to switch to smaller tires on the truck, you'll gain back quite a bit of gas mileage.

    If you are set on a second vehicle and it makes sense, 100 - 150k miles isn't too bad if you keep the cost down and keep in mind the vehicle is meant for economy, not looks and features. Forget the sunroof (they leak and add $$), your focus is on reliability and low cost of ownership to get you from point A to B. If you can manage, the car of choice would be a 1988 - 94 Accord or a 86-90something Camry. These cars get into the high 30s for mpg, last several 100k miles, and maintenance is extremely low. Avoid anyone who has made any mod, any mention of VTEC, so on. Manual transmission preferred but not necessary.

    I had a 1990 Camry I beat the hell out of. On a road trip from WA to NorCal and back, I remember pulling about 32 mpg at 80-85 mph. It was a 5 speed, 4 cylinder and did great. I think 92 was the last year of the second gen Camry. BTW, those do not like high octane. I ran 92 octane in her once and she was choking on it, but 87 octane and she ran great.

    Info about the "build":
    "Cams hydraulic Chain-drive 4x4, about 7 feet of up OR down motion on each tire: specs below Engine is a fuel injected Ford 5.0 V8 out of a '93 cobra mustang, c4 transmission and t-case out of an early bronco. 9" w/ 5.38 gears and ARB air locker mounted in the center (below driver) running chain gears on the ends where the swing arms pivot. Swing arms are hydraulically controlled individually or together, and there is coil spring and shock suspension as well. large chains running inside the swing arms turn hummer gear reduction (2:1) hubs at each wheel. tires are 39.5". The steering is linked through the swing arms as well and the steering box is mounted just infront of the axle below the driver. body construction is steel tubing (mostly DOM) and the total weight is 5900 LB"

    Rob, you need a hi-lift bro.

    Mike, what's wrong with V-Tecs? They go bad fast or something? You're right..a commuter is simply a commuter and I shouldn't have to worry about looks and features as I'll be selling it once I'm done with school. I think a 4 door integra will do me fine and I don't plan on buying a modded integra either. I want a stock one. My dad bought my brother and I a 1988 Accord LX-i to share years ago when we were still in high school and man did that thing last us forever. Went through 2 motors I believe before we decided to let it go for $500.

    I did the same thing the first time I got out (after 4 years AD)... I worked for a mill in Prineville for a while. Bring good leather gloves, you will burn through a pair a week easy. Check out USAJOBS.com if you are interested in Federal work. Your Military time counts toward retirement, and you get hiring preference being a vet. It's really a great place to work, at least if the .gov isn't shut down lol. Good luck, and if you need any advice or help with VA stuff PM me.

    Corbett is cool, but that would be two hours of your day spent staring at the windshield (with no traffic, lots of crashes through that section in the winter), and PDX is more like 45 minutes...plus traffic...

    joe, an ad that says VTEC either means they raced it or its going to cost you because they think they have something special. other than that, VTEC is great.
