A mistake needing to be rectified.

Some of you following my slow build may remember when I painted the stripes on the side of my truck.



There were a few differing opinions on my decision, and I admitted myself that I wasn't a huge fan. It's been a year since I painted the stripes giving me plenty of time to think about it, I've also been giving a lot of thought to taking the stripes off. I was told by a friend of mine that there are solvents out there that could do the job. My question is if anyone knows which products I could use and if they would take the original paint off?

 

How and what process did you use to paint them on?

Can't help you with advice how to remove it.

However I think it looks pretty good, so +1 for leaving it as it.

For next project of this kind, use plasti dip first so you can just peel it off if you change your mind.

If you sanded the area before you sprayed them then they aren't coming off

 

I don't see that coming off after a year. Maybe after a week, but it's been baked on there pretty well by now.

 

I don't think you can take it off without any damage to the truck's paint.
Anyway, I like it. It makes your truck unique and different than anyone elses. That's why I painted mine - there were just too many of the same trucks in town; now mine is unique.
I say keep it, but it is your decision.

 

I understand if you want to remove the stripes, but FWIW, I like it.

Paint your wheels black and tie it all in together.

No there really isn't anything you can do since you used straight paint. sorry man..

You could look into vinyl wrapping the whole truck...

 

It looks great man, I don't think you can remove it now without harming the original paint

 

You can repaint the entire truck ha I know that doesn't help much but if you really want them gone and don't want to strip the whole truck and do it right, you can just paint the outside the stock color again and not get the cab or between the bed and cab and whatnot. Sort of an in between option.


I need to paint soon stinking rock chips in the hood are getting huge and beginning to rust . . .

 

First off, I'm a paint guy. My forte is guitars and not cars, but the principles are pretty much the same.

To go along with what some others have said here, I'm not sure that after a year that it hasn't done some damage/bled into the underlying paint, but the only cheerful thing I'll say here is that it probably hasn't. Modern car paint cures pretty well. If this was my truck, and I wanted those things off (and I would, I'm in the minority but I don't like 'em) I'd pursue the following course of action knowing I could make things a LOT worse than they currently are, and you probably will since you're not an experienced paint guy:

Get some Turtle Wax of both varieties: green and red. And a power buffer. With two pads.

Use the power buffer like you're waxing your own balls. Seriously, that careful. Gentle, rapid touches and avoid any edges and ridges, as you'll be doing those areas the hard way...by hand. Lightly. This is a paint job not a dirty pan. It might take days. If it does it does, but don't bear down hard on the surface no matter what.

Apply some red to pad#1 and buff lightly, stop, look at pad. You should see black. Repeat. If you see the underlying red paint on the pad, stop right there because you're done and you'll have to live with how bad it looks. We're hoping there's enough clearcoat here to save your ass. Remove most of but not all of the black. Then swap pads and start in with the green. Remove the rest of the black. The ideal result is the black will be gone. You may have some areas missing most of if not all of the clearcoat but the undercoat should be intact. No biggie.

You are fortunate in this, the new Tacos are a one-coat deal and the only way to get rid of something like this on a new one is a repaint.

If this seems like an insane amount of work that will take a huge amount of time with the potential payoff of a truck with a completely fucked-up paint job, you're right. Proceed accordingly and good luck no matter what you choose to do.

 

OP: paint your wheels black and drive that truck til the wheels fall off! I LOVE those stripes! If I ever find a pattern that looks that good on a second gen I'll do it to mine!

 

I am another that is offering no help but to say that I think it looks pretty sweet! The buffing approach sounds like your best bet, but the risk seems awfully high. I think next time you try something like this you would be wise to use plasti-dip. Not that that was very helpful to you now.
