4.0L 1GR 2nd Gen Oil Change Guide

I was doing the anytime camera mod and had 2 wires mixed up, so the light came on. Did this the first time, and again when I changed to switch. So I don't think I shorted it out, but will double check.

Edit: if I did short something out wouldn't tat short out all the dash lights and not specifically one light?

Edit #2: went out and took a look, all lights come on with ignition, so cant be a blown fuse or anything. Looked at the manual, and the "how to" to reset the service button is like how you guys are saying but in brackets it says "USA only". Does this mean to beuno for Canadian?

Ordered my fumoto valve the other day to change my oil for the 1st time.
However the thread on the fumoto seem so small.....
My other car that was a sedan had a fatter thread than this fumoto.....
Is our tacomas oil drain bolt that small?

PS: i finally went under and took a look at the truck....
Is the oil pan the super small one lol....?
It looks absurdly small, and i see the metal tube the dip stick connect it to... so im pretty certain that small pan is the oil...

 

It's the one closest to the front of your truck. If you have a factory skid plate, it will be a little harder to find than the pictures in this thread show.

 

Called the dealer, and wanted to ask what was going on. The first dealer I called tried the whole reset thing with me, and thought it was a bulb, or something was up with the calibration. The second dealer I called said the Canadian vehicles do not have a service light... This would make sense since in the manual it says 'USA only'.

Any Canadian taco owners know anything about this?

 

Yeah, it's the smaller one closer to the front of the truck. The one a little further back in the transmission....don't take that one out on accident. I've seen a few folks do that on here.

 

I know which one is the trans....
The trans pan is a long rectangle shaped.

I am just worried this one i am looking at , is something other than engine and trans lol....

There only 2 drain plugs right?

Only 2 that are pointing straight down. If you found the tranny one, the oil plug is just on the other side of the cross member, closer to the engine. Or find that center jack point that is clear in the original post, it's just a little behind that. I believe it's a 14mm bolt.

It is always on so damn tight.
Now i need to wait for a oil removal tool from Amazon to proceed with my oil change -_-

I just changed my oil on my truck. Do you guys torque the bolt to spec or just hand tighten. I've done the oil change myself twice and just hand tightened but I wanted to see what others do as well. I'm sure Chris4x4 will probably advise me to torque to spec lol.

Good idea as always! Thank you Chris4x4. I tend to overtighten so I'm sure torquing would be a good rule of thumb.

I was changing my oil last night for the first time since buying my truck. I noticed that when I removed the old oil filter, virtually no oil drained out. I'm guessing that could be because the way the filter is positioned....since the truck had been sitting for a few hours, maybe the oil drained out? Which leads me to believe that the POS filter that the non-Toyota dealer put on for the last change may not have had an anti-drainback valve. Do you think this is the case or is there some concern not having any oil draining from the filter?
I used a Toyota OEM filter for my change after reading some reviews on here.

 

I use Toyo OE filters and when I remove mine, even after a couple hours waiting for it to cool off some, I get a small pool of oil in the catch around the filter.

 

I use toyota filters and usually only get a few ounces out of the filter.

 

FYI, I used to exclusively use Mobil 1, but since i switched to Penzoil Platinum, I have had zero metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug. Engine seems to run quieter as well. YMMV

 

Just wanted to thank the OP for posting this up. Although an oil change isn't rocket science, I'm no mechanic....Lol

My 13 is still under the free maintenance plan, but I hate wasting my time getting to the dealership and enjoy doing my own work. Also switched up to Mobil 1.
