Never been too active here with posting but I've garnered loads of knowledge from just reading posts. So thanks to all for that.

Last Tuesday while driving on a wet and winding 2-lane road, my rear tires spun on a curve, lost control of the truck and drove straight into a farm pond (!!!). Climbed out of window without a scratch on me, stood on the cab, and the truck starting sinking. Jumped off and swam to safety. Not a scratch on me but my truck is toast (pond was about 10' deep and the truck was submerged for > 3 hours. My truck was a silver dbl cab prerunner V6. It was my 2nd Tacoma (first was a 2000 maroon 4-cyl stepside 5 spd 4x2). Now I'm looking for my 3rd Tacoma.

I'm looking at either a 2012 or 2013 - got a couple specific trucks in mind. I see they overhauled the radio in the 2012 model only to turn around and overhaul it again for the 2013 model.

Maybe it's just pessimistic me, but it seems odd that they would redo the radio two years in a row (especially since the 2nd gen radio had been pretty much the exact same since 2005). I guess my main question is: was something wrong with the 2012 radio to make them redo it again in 2013?

I'm not too concerned about having the latest and greatest radio so as long as it wasn't user complaints and poor functionality in the 2012 model radio, I'm good with it. But if Toyota redid the radio again as a result of owner complaints, I'd be interested to know what the gripe is on the 2012 radio.

    Thanks for any input.

I got the 2013 radio. Not familiar with the '12 radio but the 13' is touch screen and has blue tooth standard. It also includes USB and auxiliary input as well.

They redid it again for the '14 YM.

People like new fancy electronics that's all.

I love it though, you dumped your truck into a pond and you're worried about the radio on the new one :D

Kind of what I thought. Just wanted to make sure. I thought it was somewhat odd because a 2011 radio was almost identical to a 2005 radio (except aux input, steering wheel controls, maybe a few minor adjustments) so they completely redid it two years in a row after leaving it alone for 6 years.

The '12 with JBL Entune has everything the newer trucks have it's just a higher tier package.

I actually prefer the radio in my 12 over the radio in my moms 13 camry. It's a finger print magnet and the touchscreen isn't the best. My finger is always hitting the wrong button and I have to take my eyes off the road to see what I'm pushing.

No issue with the radio in my 12. I have the SR5 package so the radio has bluetooth,USB,3.5mm aux, and steering wheel controls. Not sure about the 13's but I know on my 12' my back up camera is in the rearview mirror and I like that much better, also the mirror has homelink for garage doors, gates and such.

Any chance it is plug and play with a 2006? If so, I might be interested.

From what I've been told, no. Apparently it can be done, but requires making a harness.
