I have 3, 70 lb. bags of tube sand, and find the weight helps. The weak leafs were annoying in any season so I added a set of firestone riderights over the summer and love them.

2 50 pound bags of sand at a minimum. Without weight in the back, any truck is useless in 2wd.

So far this winter in NE Iowa I have not had to haul around the extra weight in my Prerunner. Life is good!

Yep. A 230lb grey iron casting or two. Seems to do the job. Come March I take it out and put it back in stock.

Weight in the back? MmmmNo. I like my rear end kicking out, gives me something to occupy my mind when I'm driving to work and back on the modern boring sophisticated smooth paved roads lol.

I always carry 600 - 800 pounds worth of tools and material in the back of my truck, but it's not for off road traction... it's for work. ;)

And yet you removed your AC compressor and power steering pump?

That was just to improve gas mileage by reducing parasitic drag on the drive belt.

The compressor and pump weight is negligible compared to what's in the bed.

I bought my Taco as a useful tool to make money, so to do that it has to be fully loaded.
But even loaded, it still gets 23-24 mpg in the city, and 28-29 on the freeway. :)

Goes down the road really nice with a 1000# in the back. During winter I'll put 4 bags of sand in the bed.

    Just starting...
Had the fishtailing in the rain issue with an empty 2004. Using 4x4 solved this problem when I was in those conditions with no weight.

A relative with a 2WD Colorado build a frame out of 2x4s and got a large plastic tote that he fills with sand. The frame holds it between the wheel wells. Works great in snow. From time-to-time someone steals the tote, and gets a box of sand.

I use bags of clumping cat litter for weight. I do have a 4x4, but the added insurance is great. If i really get stuck, i toss in some of the litter, wait for it to harden, and BAM! Amazing traction!

heated mirrors, lighted cup holders, backup lights, backflip cover, box lights, raised diff breather, solenoid tailgate lock, flashlight holder,
I put a trimmed cow bedding matt between the wheel wells then put a 3/4" x4'x4' steel plate. Doesn't move and lose no space in the box.

Go to the beach, shovel sand into the bed until your contempt with your fungsui sand garden. As you drive you will disperse some sand on the road for the person behind you that has no traction :p and if someone gets stuck, you've got plenty of sand to share. When you run out of sand, just repeat.
