It is the power converter that converts the DC back to AC for the 120 outlet in the bed. haha

I wonder if cars will stay DC forever or if they will eventually go to AC. Although, the rectifiers on the alternators can't be that expensive anymore I'm sure.

The Tesla Roadster uses a three-phase Alternating Current (AC) Induction motor.

I haven't ever looked, but do they have a transmission or do they rely solely on a variable frequency drive to change the speed of the induction motor?

Or do they use a combination of both?

Now that I think about it, pairing a CVT transmission and a variable frequency drive on an induction motor you could have that motor screaming at the max torque value the entire time while accelerating. You could literally have a flat torque curve at the rear wheels on your peak value. That would be badass!

The wide torque band, particularly the torque available at low RPM, eliminates the need for gears – the Roadster has only a single speed gear reduction; one gear ratio from zero to top speed. Switch two of the phases (this can be done electronically), and the motor runs in reverse. No need for a reverse gear. Not only is this design incredibly simple, reliable, compact, and lightweight, but it allows a unique and exhilarating driving experience. The Roadster accelerates faster than most sports cars and whether driving on windy mountain roads or cruising down the highway, there’s always instant torque.

Yeah I remember hearing about that. Electronics can work very quickly. haha And like you just said they must rely entirely on a variable frequency drive to change the speed. That is pretty awesome! Any idea what RPM that motor can rap up to then?

For my final project in my lab we are using a variable frequency drive to adjust the speed of a synchronous motor. We are going to hook it up to an induction motor to supply a counter torque and measure how the speed affects the pull out torque of the synchronous motor.

I've been playing with motors all semester and just took a test yesterday on how synchronous, induction and DC motors work. Not fun, way too many different equations for each motor to remember and to mix up between all 3...

Ahh, hard to tell! It was the first thing I noticed but I just thought it was like a lot of your pics that make your truck look black. The same cb antenna location fooled me as well...

Holy cow Ben, I didn't realize how tall your truck was compared to a stock height truck!

And how did it happen that you two put your antenna mounts in the exact same place? Are you trying to be twins lol?

    Also...green and single as ever,
    That's out Ben
