Being in Kansas and in the Wichita area, I work aircraft. As for what I do, that depends on the day of the week. official title is electrical engineer, but I also certify systems, work with the FAA, troubleshoot planes, some design, certification and compliance report writing, and also a DER.

 

Self employed, commercial door repair, locksmith. Pays the bills.

I love my job too mostly because it's the easiest exchange for food, clothing and shelter I can find. But, if not for them helping me supply my needs, I would be outta there....

 

I took a $20k pay cut to take my job.




Okay... technically, I had been unemployed for 7 months so it was an $80k cut followed by a $60k raise......

 

Yes and no... I love my job and it pays me well. But that comes at a heavy price as noted in my PTSD Thread linked in my sig. For 20 years I have been a Paramedic, Haz-Mat Tech (Chemistry, Rail Car Specialist, Etc...), High Angle Rope Rescue Tech, Swift Water Tech, and I'm in the middle of Structural Collapse / Confined Space Refresher Class at the moment. I don't receive any extra pay for any of these specialty positions so the guy that is doing the bare minimum on the job gets the same amount of pay that I do. But that said, I didn't join the Fire Dept. to just sit on my ass and get a free T-Shirt like some others. I joined to help others and that is what I enjoy doing. It is a different job every day that I show up to work and that in itself makes it worth showing up.

Would I do it for free? No. But in a sense I am doing some of it for just that.

 

Honestly yes. I drive cars for a living (among other less fun things like project management and data processing). I learn a lot every day and enjoy most days.

Edit: you get the idea, its not like I'd become a hobo just to do my job lol. I'd obviously leave if they stopped paying me.

 

I work at my cousins automotive shop on mainly lifted trucks and older cars/trucks.

 

That's great I'm happy for you guys. I think I will always be doing something myself. That being said, if I were to have enough money drop into my lap that I was no longer concerned about supporting my needs until well past my expiration date my fat ass would be out. I'd be fishing off shore and doing some other stuff I enjoy like spending that 40 hours a week with my loved ones.

 

I'm a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. I spent 7 years working on Heavy trucks and am currently working on Forklifts/Material handling equipment. I can't complain, the pay is above average and there is always work available.

 

I've been fixing them for 20 years now. current helicopter is a EC-135p1. Ridden hard and put to bed wet. We are getting new 407s to replace the fleet though.

In the winters I teach snowboarding at a ski mountain. During the summer and fall I work as a tour guide at a motorcycle museum. I love both my jobs!

Nope not really! I go to "work" with a smile on my face and that's something I'm thankful for!

 

That's awesome! Hopefully you can keep it that way. Very few of us can say that. My good days at work far outweigh the bad. The bad days can be pretty rough but luckily enough they are usually pretty far between.

It's good to know that that's the case. I've only known one firefighter well in my life and he has to be one of the toughest guys on the planet.
