Stepside trucks: what's the point?

So I have seen a few stepside trucks around, and was wondering - what exactly is the point of them? Why would you have one over a regular truck?

 

Some people like the looks I guess. I don't think that step is all that functional.

Its just a different bed style. Some folks don't need all the bed space (look how little the short beds are). Different strokes for different folks. Why'd the OP buy a double cab?

My s10 was a "sport side" as they called it. My tacoma bed looked like a full size when I upgraded. I did use the step all the time however. I also think they look absolutely horrible. I would never buy a taco with one.

 

Cause IMO it makes the truck look hidious. and it makes no sense

 

My dad's old electical contracting business bought stepside Chevy's in the 70's......for side toolbox mounting.....remove the fenders & you have a 4 foot wide bed & toolboxes.

Nowdays it's just for looks

 

Back in the old days the side steps were really useful for standing on when loading / unloading stuff (like hay bales out in a field).

... Or for rack or toolbox mounting, as mentioned above ...

For non-working trucks, though, they mainly survived because some folks liked the look ...

 

I've always liked they way they look. And as far as the purpose...the steps on the side serve as steps.

ok well my comment was in reference to the current model trucks that are out kinda thought that was a given though. Old school trucks is a different story.

I'd drive it. Well, on this particular one I would replace the grille.

 

They looked good on the 1st gen Tacomas in my opinion. Some do look stupid and ugly though.

 

^Ditto. There's a Silver TRD OR First gen around where I live and it's a sexy little beast. I'd drive it with pride fo sho.

Some trucks look horrendous with it though.

 

and you armed with ALL this experience and knowledge. Of course it makes no sense to you...you have no idea why they were there in the first place.

Hideous btw, would be a rattle canned truck with half-ass mods done to it.
