fluid film on rust??

Yeah right, motor oil came directly from the ground refined with all those chemicals in it so we can run it in our trucks..when done with it just pour it back on the ground "whence" it came from. Wow that was SO helpful. Guess you dont understand the original question so you want to add something to the discussion you know nothing about...

 

Op don't be lazy like you were with the por15. Actually put some work in the prep and you'll be happy.

 

Just want to stop the current progression..should have krowned or fluidfilm it from the start. I think i will give it a shot too.

 

Ya... it actually came out of the ground with more chemicals in it than when it came out of his engine.

But I agree that it is irresponsible to dump used oil on the ground... but the primary reason is groundwater contamination. The oil we pull from the ground is far below the aquifers.

 

How did the POR15 just "wash off"?
I'm talking about the full 3-stage process that begins with wire brushing to remove any loose flakes, followed by Marine Clean and Metal-Prep, the combination of which cleans, neutralizes the rust, and covers the metal with a phosphate coating in preparation for application of the POR15 sealant/paint product.

If you just grabbed a rattle can of POR15 and sprayed a rusted frame... ya... it's not going to last.

 

Sounds hard to believe i know. I can only think that after using the metal ready then the h2o rinse, the underside did not fully dry. Used hose to rinse the m.ready per instructions, truck then sat in a heated garage for approx. 24 hrs. Everything looked and felt dry prior to applying the por15.

 

Strange... that should have done the job.

 

What Toyota needs to do is test their frames better and just take them and dip them in a better coating than paint.

 

Por 15 is for body work. Frame needs completely restored!

I'm not worried about rust.

 

You'd shit if you knew we oil the gravel roads out here, to keep the dust down. Hey, I'm all for no oil in our roads. I wish it was like driving the rubicon going to work, but alas, too many prius driving hippies to let our roads go to pot. (You just pour a little oil on a rag, then wipe the frame down. Similar to oiling the chain on a motorcycle. It's not messy and won't kill any fishies.)

 

Oh OK then you won't mind if I just dump a few gallons of used oil in your yard then.

 

Dumping oil on dirt roads was outlawed decades ago.

Big difference in whiping something down in oil, like the frame of a truck, than an oil spill. Fyi do you know the asphalt is made from oil and tar?

I bought some fluid film to put on my frame, but after thinking about it a lot I never used it. I didn't like the idea of the FF, attracting dust and road grit.

Instead I cleaned the front half of the frame really well with brushes and rags. And then hit with some Krylon rust tuff enamel. I've also used some Rustoleum flat black as well. The Krylon had an excellent applicator tip compared to the Rustoleum can... Anyways, cleaning the frame sucks. But the end result is that it looks almost new again.
