Nahh... the VVTi isn't going to operate out of spec and cause damage, it just may not operate at the most efficient timing position.

The invoice says, "Toyota Synthetic Oil". Haha! I have no idea what that means. Could that mean they didn't use Mobil 1? Who knows? I am still wondering why they would put oil that's meant for the 2.7 into a 4.0. It's boggling my mind and kind of pisses me off a little.

Haha! It even says to take out my mats and use "Toyota winter mats". Also to change to those floor hook clips to hold my mats in. I ain't taking out my Weathertechs. Screw that!

Toyota synthetic oil is Mobil-1... the Toyota Synthetic is bulk stock (0w20).
You asked for synthetic, and the kid doing oil changes gave you synthetic without checking the weight requirements for the engine.
    No surprises there.

Reason #472 that I do all of my own work if I have the space and tools. Nobody cares about my truck more than I do.
Even if I had "free" Toyotacare, I would not take my vehicles to the dealer for routine service.

I'd like to learn how to do my own maintenance on my own vehicle. Since that park on the street and have a gravel pad, I'm not allowed to. Apparently it's a bi-law and I could get into trouble if anything were to make it into the ground or on the street. I don't really have much of a choice except to trust someone to do a basic oil change.

I wrote the person I was dealing today an e-mail. Going to have them phone me in the morning and get it worked out. I'm not impressed.

V6 is easy peasy without spilling a drop.
The 2.7 is harder to do cleanly because of the filter position.

AMS/Oil 0W-20 in the engine as recommended. I'm from the old days I didn't like thin runny oil. But it works fine and has used an imperceptible amount in 4,000 miles. 70,000 miles on the truck.

I also put AMS/Oil gear oil in the differentials, transmission and transfer case. The transfer case shifts much easier now, it used to get hung up going out of low range.

The transfer case had purplish oil in it when I changed it. Royal Purple? It was inferior to AMS/Oil.

I had talked to two other dealerships and they recommended not to use 0w20 since that it's made for the 4cyl. One of the dealers I talked to sent me a chart of what oil is for what year, model of Toyota. I had sent it to the Customer Service person I was dealing with yesterday, as well as the two pages of the 4cyl and V6 oil that is recommended for both(manual). Her and her manager couldn't give me an answer to why 0w20 was used. They have 5w30 in full synthetic I as told by CS. I asked why wasn't that used in the first place? No answer was given. I am going to drop my truck off tomorrow and they're going to flush it and put in 5w30FS(no charge to me). I haven't decided if I am going to go back to that certain dealership or not.

I want to thank Rich91710 because I never would have thought to check if he didn't say anything. I put too much trust into the dealership thinking they could just do a simple oil change with putting in the recommended oil. I just wish I was able to do my own work and not have to rely on someone else since I don't have the space to do it properly.

I had told my roommates what happened and I told them when they buy a new car and whoever does their maintenance to just double check what they did(if possible).

    Same here.
I grew up on 10w40, and ran 20w50 in my Camaro, and even my '94 Toyota p/u after it got up over 150k.

I flipped when I found I should be running 5w30 in my Tundra and wife's Echo. Got used to using that and they changed a lot of specs to 2w20 and I was like WTF?????????????
Glad they're going to make it right for you.

Like President Reagan said "Trust but verify" ;)

Mobil 1 is a tv add. Exposure sells products. Royal Purple is better. Especially the "top shelf" (but not more expensive/ shop Amazon) product with zinc, etc. It actually fills-in minute scratches on journals and walls.

    You've got that reversed.

Royal Purple is pushed on every TV show on cable, and it is NOT a superior product.

I ran it and ran UOA... didn't hold up any better than Castrol non-synthetic:
    http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/oil/oil.xls

Mobil-1 was one of the first commercially available synthetic oils, and is the supplier for Toyota, as well as every other auto maker that installs synthetic oil at the factory.
It is also used in jet engines. I haven't seen any TV advertisements for jet turbine oil.

Used Royal Purple for years in various old motors - "fixes" 'em. Funny, but I''ve never seen a jet turbine tv commercial either. I do however have cable (Florida) and there are no RP adds. Must be a left coast thing.

I use RP in everything but never see any adds for it here in Iowa except if I'm watching sine NHRA on ESPN which is hardly on. If RP is good enough for 1000+ engines it's more than sufficient for my taco. Just my thoughts.

Also every shop around here uses Mobil 1 as their house oil but could that not be due to cost? Why would they care enough about your vehicle to put the best in. All they care is to put something good though to meet the minimal requirements.

So everything got worked out at the dealership(sort of). I am still trying to figure out how come they put in 0w20 even though they have 5w30 that is full synthetic(made by Esso). I am going to keep on pushing until I get an answer. It "could be" an honest mistake even though it says 5w30 on the cap where the oil goes in.

Thanks again for the help everyone.

Not commercials... product placement in "wrench monkey" shows on Speed channel and other cable channels that are aimed at the motorsports enthusiast.
Those shows are practically an infomercial for Royal Purple, with a couple of simply bolt-on mods thrown in to make it look legit.

"Okay, today we're going to install a cold air intake in this '05 Civic. There, now that that's done, we're going to give her a fresh oil change with Royal Purple synthetic oil and filter......"

It's worse than the commercials being written into Overhaulin', Biggest Loser, and Survivor.

Hint: The sticker on the side of the race car is not what is used in the car.
Richard Petty made a lot of money with STP stickers on his cars, but none of those cars ever once contained STP fuel or oil treatment products.
A lot of manufacturers specify Mobil-1.
Any shop that is a licensed repair station for European imports would lose their franchise if they used anything else.
