We spent the past week in Maine on vacation. This morning we were packing up to come home and our beagle started shaking and lost the use of his back legs. This lasted about 5 or 6 minutes(felt like forever)and he came out of it. In the meantime my wife was on the phone trying to find a vet. Closest one was about 2 hours away. He seemd fine so we left to drive home. Everything seems to be back to normal now, we are at home after a 6 hour drive. We will be taking him for a checkup on monday when our vet opens up. The only thing I can think of is he ate a slug from the yard where we were staying. I've never heard of slugs causing problems before but I was wondering if anyone on the dog page knows anything about this. Thanks for anyone who might answer.

There is a disease called "Old Dog Syndrome" that causes stroke-like symptoms, but I'm not sure if that includes seizures. Dogs often come out of it, but I was under the impression that that took more than just a day or two. That's the only thing I can think of other than just a regular siezure, as dogs can develop those just like humans can (and they can be contolled with medication as well). Note that in spite of the name, a dog does not need to be old to get it/have it. I don't think that slugs would have that effect either. Good luck at the vet and keep us posted! I hope all is well!

my cousins dog got real serious back pains once, couldnt use his back legs and was yelping like crazy. vet gave him some glucosamine pills and some muscle relaxants and it helped out a lot. this was like a year ago and theres been no issues since. the dog is only like 3 years old. good luck.

Thanks Charli and Magicbean. He seems fine today but we'll be bringing in for a workup to see if we can find out what happened. My wife spoke online with a vet who thought it sounded like epilepsy (sp?). I'll keep you updated. By the way, my dog is about 5 or 6, not sure because he was a rescue.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
My wife begged me to get him, I said I don't want a white dog. Well we applied to a Boxer rescue and after a month ordeal turned down. We were sad and actually kind of mad due to the way we feel it was handled. Oh well life goes on. Well after a week she sent me an e-mail from work saying he was still available. It must of been fate. We drove 4 1/2 hrs the following saturday to pick him up. This is my first dog, and our first as a couple. HE IS THE BEST!!! We adore him! Although I would like a brindle next, I will have another boxer.

Him and his sister and brother. They were all cute but to be honest we did like him best and he seemed to like us.

Notice how they are the same size.

He has always loved his walks in the woods.

This is him, such a snuggle bug!!

And my baby is all grown up and driving!! :D

And yes he does that on his own. Really likes the Taco. Climbs in to take naps. Never did that with my Chevy!! LOL

They truly are. As I write this him and the cat are messing around.

Ghost we only took the white one. Mostly due to financial reasons as he was a 3rd of the cost of his siblings. We did really love him though, all other things aside. Next time I believe we may save up to get a brindle though. The breeder also had all the others spoken for. Make sure you find a quality breeder in your area. And don't be afraid to travel a little ways. In the end that is the best thing we could have done. That way you can help avoid some of the health problems. They are too great of a dog to lose after only a few years.

My rocko has claimed the futon at my place. Does your's leave "stamps" on your bed sheets and other furniture from laying his face on things? My roommates always joke cause my blankets have white marks all over them from where rocko lays his face on them and drules.

I love them as puppies!! Polar really doesn't drool much, but the other day he did have his face on the window sill and left a puddle!! LOL But I think he may have been drinking before. He likes doing window art in our vehicles though.
