My sister bought a 250r... Stage 2 jet and exaust. Got it for just over $1000. Only thing I like is how light it is, makes it easy to push home.

Don't buy one. You'll get bored with it quick.

I used to have a virago 250. I did get tired of it pretty quick but still liked having it to learn on. I passed the full license test on it easy. It would do 55, get 70 mpg, full coverage insurance was $250 a yr. I paid 1800 cash for it and sold it about 9 months later and didn't lose any money on it. Yeah they are easy to push mine had a bad battery when I bought it and roll started on flat ground all the time, I cant really push the 1100 I have now around like that.

There are SOOOO many good inexpensive older bikes out there to learn, I would NEVER recommend a learner buy a new bike. The first time you drop it in a parking lot or at a stop sign you're going to be crying in your beer. Buy a cheap used bike and ride that until you really comfortable with it, then start scaling up.

The only I reason I bought a new Tiger was because there were so few used models out there, and for an extra 1,000 bucks I could have a brand new bike finance at like 2%, versus buying used.

250 sport bikes are a world apart from 250 cruisers. Even the old 1988 Honda VTR 250 I had would run circles around the 250 Virago I currently have for my wife. For a beginner, I would only recommend a 250 cruiser if you are too short to reach the ground on a 250 or 500 sport or standard bike. Even then, a 650 Savage or S40 has a low seat height, only weighs about 30 LBS more, and is more freeway capable (for short periods). I originally bought my wife an S40, but her co-workers told her "A 650 is TOO BIG for a beginner", and that's why she was having trouble handling it.:jerkoff: Which sucks because I was able to ride the 650 to work (which includes about 10 miles of freeway), no way I'm doing that on the 250.

I frequently see the argument "Don't buy a 250, you'll become bored too fast", I've also see this applied to 500, 650 and 750-900 cruisers. BIG DEAL, you'll become bored with it, it's not like you are married to it. Beginner bikes are easy to sell, if you've bought right you'll be able to sell it for exactly what you paid, as long as you don't try to pimp it out and make it look like a supersport.

Yea I wish i wouldve bought a s40 instead of the virago since there still small and about the same price used. I never saw one til after I bought my 1100. If i had I probably wouldnt have gotten rid of it so fast like the 250. I like the smaller bikes though and think most people underestimate them. You can also pick up one that is newer and low miles for 2k or less. You get to spend more time ridin and less time working on them.

If you get bored with a 250 Ninja you're riding it wrong and or expecting too much from the motor. You can and will eventally get bored with any bike and yes even a liter bike can seem 'not as fast' as when you first hopped on it.

If you take the 250 Ninja for what it is, 'a beginners sportbike' it's a good first bike.

When being a new rider and even if you're been riding for decades, you should always be taking mental notes on your riding each time you ride. You never master a bike, it's an ongoing learning experiance. You can take a curve rated at 35 MPH at twice+ the speed limit just as easy on a 250 as a 600-1000 bike.

Learn to lean, brake and ride on a 250, then when your skills match your right hand, upgrade later.

    EDIT.

Here is a video of what I'm getting at. The camera bike is a 250 Ninja and he's more or less making the 'bigger bike' riders, well look bad.

For a small cruiser, they're great. Light and easy to handle, with some decent grunt. They're not so great for the DMV test though, I blame the raked out forks and high straight bars. I bought this one for $2000, put around 1500 miles on it, my wife dropped it a couple times and then we sold it for $2200.

I wonder what's going through the heads of the other riders when they keep having to rip past him on the straight stretches.

I used to work with a guy who bought a Hayabusa as his first street bike. He eventually sold it after going for a ride with a couple on a Ninja 500. They were so far ahead through the corners, he was only able to use the straight stretches to catch up.

They're probably pretty mad. Most guys egos are to big to fit on a 250.

Having a small bike saved my ass at least once for sure. I took a turn to wide and it started to slide out from under me on some gravel. I was going pretty slow (maybe 15 mph) I kicked it back up and didnt go down. If that happened on my 1100 I dont think I would have been so lucky.

honestly if you just need something to scoot around on they arent bad as long as you dont have to go over any huge hills or bridges and i wouldnt recommend getting on 285 etc youll be run over for not going fast enough. but insurance was like 8$ a month for the one i had LOL
