does anyone know weight capacity for different types of roof racks? i was thinking about just getting a basket and drilling some mounting holes into the OEM roof rack cross bars that way i wouldnt have to drill holes into the roof. also feel like that way it would be easier to remove or move around.

 

At the alignment shop. Dennis I think I knocked it out when I jumped it outta that hidden mud hole. Also picked up my rack from getting it powder coated. They did an outstanding job.

my roof racks can hold upwards of 1000 lbs


factory and aftermarket (thule/yakima/etc) are typically rated (on paper) for a max of 150 lbs. i can't speak for stock, but the aftermarkets can carry far more. they actually used to be rated for 250-300 lbs depending on the rack, but some lawsuits happened, regulations were passed, and now they are rated for 150. nothing in the design has changed, but they had to lower the posted rating, because idiots would load up their roofs with 300 lbs, and then drive like a sports car and roll their vehicls.

 

Think thule cross bars held 150? Give oe take

 

well i guess my question is more so of how much of a difference will it make if i mount it one way as opposed to the other? or would that just depend on the basket/rack?

i haven't driven with 1000 lbs up there, but i got 6 guys to stand on the rack at once (all in the 180-200lb range) and jump. the rack deflected less than an inch, and never permanately deformed.

held up to the test. if you take out the head liner and the weather strips and really look at the roof construction, where the racks bolt up, there are like 6 layers of steel, and the way the channels are contoured, it's a very very strong area. after all, that's the part of the truck that is designed to hold up and protect you in a rollover.

i would if i had a steady place to work. not so much the case for the next 10 months in an apartment.

that test was for this rack. it's built stronger than the one on my truck, but i'd be game to start piling guys on my roof to see how far mine will go. i would expect mine to still be able to take at least 700-800 lbs though
