I agree with mostly all of this. Except here in Arkansas, we don't have empty spaces in our prisons. We have one of the worst recidivism rates in the country. From 2003-2007 it was around 47% IIRC.

 

Up until the very end of the article, it reads as if stealing the $159 jacket was the only crime this guy had ever committed. At the end it brings up Louisiana's 4-strikes law and mentions he had been previously convicted of robbery in the amount of $216. Robbery is a violent crime. So, this guy is a lifetime, violent criminal that committed a non-violent crime that got him put away for life. The article seemed to be intentionally misleading.

 

Yes, I am very aware of "x" strike laws. I don't particularly give a fuck about them. 4 convictions of petty theft should not equal a life sentence when a murder that widows a wife and deprives multiple children of a father only gets a couple decades of incarceration.

The article actually states that robbery is a non-violent crime. Don't know if that was a typo or misunderstanding on your part.
