Run without Air Conditioning

Hey there,

I'm brand new to the forum, and I just recently purchased my first Tacoma (former Cruiserhead).
I have a 1999 Tacoma with 3.4 V6 and a gnarly growl coming from the front of engine. It's a similar growl to a power steering pump, but I've concluded its not. I hit the engine with the stethoscope and traced the noise back to the A/C compressor.
Is it possible to get just the clutch for the compressor? I've searched local shops and the web and I haven't come up with anything yet.
More importantly, can I run the engine without having the belt on the A/C? Just for the time being until I get a replacement compressor/clutch.

Have you checked the A/C idler pulley? The bearings in them are notorious for going bad. It is the pulley located at the lowest point and exposed to water/moisture.

 

I haven't had my a/c belt on for like 2 or 3 years. My engine had a bad squeak and that was the first thing I did to try to find it. Now that I haven't used a/c for that long I'm just about to remove the whole a/c setup off my engine.

 

x2. I just had to replace mine. The truck sounded horrible and all it needed was the AC tensioner pulley

 

Removing the belt shouldn't hurt anything, I was rolling for a few weeks without my power steering belt when I broke the tensioner bolt

 

Convert the AC pump to an on board air pump and hook it back up! Saw it in another thread. It was an awesome setup!

I haven't, but I will replace it also.. I manage to find a place that sell the clutches, Rockauto.com.


This onboard air compressor is a neat idea. I use 2/70 air coditioning anyways, so I like this idea. Thanks for the link Tug.

 

ehh id rather buy the compressor from harbor freight for like 30$ looks like ALOT of work lol. anyways GL with your a/c sry to hijack your thread.
