axle shims

mytoytaco, I know I have'nt been on here a while, but after looking at those pictures, I think your leafs are starting to show some sag. After some extremley light detective work, looks like you jump your truck (sig), tow some stuff, and it's an 05. Maybe this is a good excuse to treat yourself to a new leaf pack?

is this an easy install? would you recomend a non mechaninc install?

 

It's pretty simple:

1) Jack up rear of truck
2) Put frame on jackstands
3) Place jack under rear dif to support axle
4) Lift axle a little, not enough to lift truck off jack stands
5) loosen U-bolts
6) Lower axle just enough to slide shims in
7) Lift axle back up
8) re-tighten U-bolts, lower truck


Someone let me know if I missed a step in there..

 

are the u-bolts long enough? stock u-bolts, with AAL eats up a good bit of thread..shims i assume will take up even more. input?

 

I did have to get longer U-bolts. I got extra long ones and just cut the excess off.

Ill have to double check. I have a 1.5 aal so who knows. Thanks for the info gents. Very helpful. Would I follow the same steps if I had to replace the U bolts? What would I use to cut?

 

I used a grinder with a cut off wheel

 

Get 3* shims. Only buy 2 longer U-bolts for the rear where the shim/wedge is thicker.

 

Lol. Why didn't I think to only buy 2 longer ones? Good advice.

 

where do you get these shims from...So as I am understanding I should not have to remove the leaf spring centering pins?

 

You guys need to read this thread. Its not always just a simple as installing shims and cb drop. This guy gives a great explanation and detailed way to fix the vibs. Hope it helps!

I am having vibes at 40mph slightly and more noticeable at 60mph. I can hear it more than i can feel it. It sounds like it's coming from the front so I replaced the clamshell needle bearing with the ecgs bushing because I've heard the bearing commonly causes vibes. No luck though. Also replaced the ps CV axle, also no luck. I'm wondering if the vibes are actually in the rear? Any suggestions? I recently put 5100s all the way around lifting the front about 2.5" with a 1.5" aal in the rear

 

Did you install the dif drop? This along with the shims is what resolved my issues. I had the same setup on my 05 Tacoma.

 

Yeah I put in the diff drop with no luck. I can still try the shims but it really sounds like it's coming from the front end. Any idea what size shims I should try?
