Every time the Flyers play the Pens I think back to their playoff series a couple years back when the Flyers just ate them up.

I got into this debate with a co worker the other day, it really only applies to the 30+ crowd. But do you think there is more talent today in the NHL or back in the mid-late 90's? I look at the list of names that played then it's pretty unbelievable.

Today-Crosby, Malkin, Datsyuk, Chara, OV, Lundqvest, ect....

90's- Jagr, Lemieux, Sundin, Forsberg, Lindros, Yzerman, Sakic, Roy, Belfour, Selanne, Kariya, Modano, Federov, Roenick, ect....I know theres more on both sides, but after thinking about it those 90's names hung around for a while and were always a threat. Now it seems theres a few top guys and a bunch a level below them.

Hard to say. Guys sure did score a lot more points back then, but there is more of a defense first approach in today's game, probably because there are so many teams now and the talent pool is watered down. To be successful most teams need a good defensive system.
You don't see 2 guys with 76 goals each sharing the Rocket Richard trophy these days, unlike in 199whatever when Selanne/Mogilny lead the league.
Also the goaltenders are far better today, and have comically large padding compared to the 80s. There used to be a lot of wrist shots from 80 feet away going in with no traffic in front of the net.

Let's not forget as well that the players today are much bigger, stronger, and (generally) faster than 15-20 years ago, so backchecking and forechecking are carried out at a much faster speed.

I understand that the players and game have changed, but today is seems there are far fewer super stars that are always on top of the game. Where 15-20 yrs ago, there were tons of super stars who could put up great numbers. Sakic had 100 pts his last full season. Jagr and Selanne are still scoring threats in their early 40's. Iginla looks like a 3rd line player at what 36? in 2001 Lemieux had 76 pts in 1/2 season. Will Crosby and OV still be dominate in 5 yrs? It's tough to say.

I sure hope so. Playing with some balls and heart lately.

HAHA FU you bald SOB :D

The 0-3 series we came back to win was epic. They just dropped their panties after game three and let us have our way with them.

He has evolved a ton in the past three seasons. From scrappy fighter taking bad penalties for no reason to a trusted player that's reserved and getting some great chances. Kid is growing up for sure.

In the past few were good so the starts shined bright. Now everyone is good so they take away from the starts glimmer.

Crosby is a bitch and the next time he takes a hit to the head he is going going GONE.

+ they don;t make them like they used to. Today's youth are pussy's. Nothing like when I was growing up and would walk backwards uphill to school in the snow 20 miles. :D

Do you think the game is better now than it was during that time?
