I4 vs V6

I know this has probably been beaten like a dead horse, but I am looking at getting a 04 and not sure if I want a I4 or a V6 this will be my daily driver, but this will also be used to possibly carry a 4 wheeler or 2 on a trailer with a canopy full of camping gear into the blue mountains. What would you guys get and why, also looking at 06s with either engine, And will need a access or extended cab.

I'd go with the v6. Contrary to popular belief--The second gens.(2005 and later) v6's get better gas mileage due to the lower rpm's & gear ratios in the automatic transmission. Plus, if you're hauling anything it's comforting to have that extra horsepower. Heck, it's comforting to have more HP even if you're not hauling anything. IMHO

go for the second gen. its improved with locker options and leaf spring stuff. and for the engine size. it depends. the 4 cyl is very powerful more powerful than the rangers V6. but if you are doing a helluva lot towing then i would go for the v6. but if you like getting almost 25-30 pg then go for the 4 cyl. th 4 cyl wil tow what your saying as long as its under 3500 lbs. 4000 might be pushing it a little too much.

 

if plan on this being your only truck for a while. this will be my first vehicle and since i do hunt and fish but i also have a decent 20-30min drive into college. which makes engine choice and generation choice hard.

 

get you a 4x4 4 cyl. its great on gas and its practical to haul with too

 

Having driven both a 4cyl and 6cyl 1st Gen Tacoma, I am more comfortable with the 6 cylinder engine. It just seemed to me like the 4 cylinder motor was straining, and working hard, just to keep up to speed. With the V6, you have plenty of power. I pull my 4 wheeler just fine, as well as a 19ft fishing boat. Also, if you don't drive stupid (ie, take it easy on the skinny pedal), you can get pretty decent gas mileage.

 

not to great gas mileage but pretty decent... if your not gonna use the 4x4 get the 4x2 better on gas than the 4x4... especially if your gonna commute to school and stuff i think the 4cyl is better...

 

I had a 2009 AC 4cyl 4X4. I now have a 2010 AC V6 4X4 Auto. I have owned both, so I don't have to guess. I preferred the 4 cyl over the 6. It easily got 25 IMPG, whereas my V6 has averaged 20 IMPG. I laugh when some people suggest that the 4 and 6 are close mileage-wise, they are not. The 4 has plenty of power, I found it towed my #2700 folding camper effortlessly, and very effeciently at 70 mph. My opinion is you will be very happy with the 4. The only reason I have the 6 is the wife hates shifting. If it came with an auto, I'd have bought it. I'd say you may save 20% on your fuel bill. Around town, maybe more. Of the 2 trucks, I preferred the 4 overall....Good luck
