Thanks for the TSB. I need to look into that some more. Not sure what we have for mileage on it. Now I'm pissed though! Known TSB for this issue, and the dealer tells me it's normal. WTF! Had I known this shit when I called them on it, we'd still be under warranty to get it fixed. In fact, we bought it CPO so you'd think things like this would've been done already.

I'm probably out of warranty by now, but now I want to see if the TSB was released before we bought. Then I can find out why it wasn't done before we bought this "certified" pre-owned car....

West Camino is fun and easy, nothing you would need high clearance or 4wd for unless you go off some side trails. I've been out to Catway Rd off Fig Mountain and want to go back now that I have some clearance and a hi-lift because there was a side road rated moderate in difficulty. East Camino is so mellow even sedans can hit it. Im hoping to check out Sierra Madre, Rock Front OHV and Ballinger OHV sometime in the near future.

Ha no worries. I'm a bit of a tomboy and love to dress rugged so I get that A LOT. :roll eyes: Thanks RAPR for noticing tho!

    TSB was released 8/11/11.
Sadly, your 2007 is going to be out of the 3/36, so the repair will be on your dime. The fucked thing is, vehicles from 2008 were already out of warranty by the time the TSB was released. It's the same thing they did with the Tacoma headlight DRL burning issue. Half of the vehicles "covered" were already out of 3/36, and if Toyotacare doesn't want to cover, they don't have to.
They haven't elevated it to recall status yet, which would cover your repairs.
Maybe push corporate on it and let them know the selling dealer said it was normal.

Is it burning more than a quart every 1200? That's their test for coverage.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the truck I just replaced with my '13 prerunner was a '94 hi-lux V6 4WD shorty (pre-taco). When I sold it, it had 175000+ miles, all of it with the K&N. It didn't burn oil at all, though at about 160k miles, it had developed a 1-drop-per-week leak at the main seal, and finally, through the leaking head gasket. None of those conditions can, I believe, be attributed to the air filter.

on that truck I changed the oil & filter every 3000-3500 miles with 20-50W Castrol GTX (non-synth) and a Purolator Pure One filter (PL10241, which, oddly enough, is the same for my '13 V6).

As for the dealer overcharging, I'm sure they'd say the difference was the "labor" (all 5 minutes of it) to install it.

The TSB States it is good with the 60 months or 60,000 miles power train warranty.

That was not uncommon for the 22RE. I never had an issue with leaks, my boss did.
    Yup.
I had 225k on mine when I traded it on the '03 Tundra, but the oil consumption wasn't really obvious until 140-150k.
When I did the clutch at 180k, I still thought it was going to last forever.

Good catch, but even at that, PT is going to be over unless he got the Rav prior to August 2012 . The TSB would have covered the 2007 model year its first year, but right now the 2009 vehicles are beginning to fall off.

Edit: Still hope... Certified Used is 100,000/84 months.

We did that with my wife's Wrangler. The stereo stopped working, took it in while under warranty to have it replaced and they said a new radio was on backorder and would take 6 weeks. We called in 6 weeks to see if it came in and they said no and to call back the following week. We did and same thing, finally at 9 weeks after it was "ordered" we came in cause the Jeep was now out of warranty. Talked to someone and he said it was never ordered and no paperwork and that we would have to pay for it. Luckily we kept the original paperwork showing it was on order and talked to the parts manager, complained about the whole situation and had a new stereo put the next day at no charge alone with a complimentary oil change.

Have you seen Chrysler's TSB on this?!?!

    Chrysler Motor Oil Consumption Guidelines

Chrysler has adjusted its acceptable motor oil consumption guidelines for 2012-2013 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep gasoline vehicles (Chrysler Bulletin #09-001-12 Engine Oil Consumption Guideline):

    • First 50,000 miles of engine life: one quart per 2,000 miles
    • Engines with over 50,000 miles: one quart per 750 miles
    • Aggressive driving conditions: one quart per 500 miles

Backed off the belt tensioner last night and confirmed that the lower idler pulley (the double-bearing one) is my noise maker. The other 3 pulleys have play in them, so they're being replaced too before winter hits.

So I put a call in to my buddy at NAPA this morning. The 4 pulleys (2 x 36173, 2 x 36174) and a new serpentine belt - all Gates - retail at over $550! If I had time, I'd get them from the US instead... Thankfully he got me down to about $380, but daaaaamn...

Looking at that pricing, I can see why this is a $700-800 dollar job at a shop up here in the Great White.

Hoping to pick them up and swap them out this afternoon/tonight sometime.

The first line is better than most. However, after that it's awful! Sounds to me like the engine burns the oil and the company burns the customer.

The TSB says 5 years of service or 60,000 miles. Being as we're at 95,000 miles we're over.

I didn't mention it at oil changes because my wife was the one bringing it in, and I didn't think it was worth mentioning each time since the dealer originally told me "it's normal".

However, now I have an appointment to drop it off on Wednesday to have them investigate "oil consumption" and look for leaks... Supposedly this investigation won't cost me anything, and they will go from there.

Needless to say I told them I was more than a little irritated that the dealer told me this was normal, and now I find out from "some random guy on the internet" that there's a TSB *THEY* never told me about. ;) I also mentioned since I bought this from them as CPO I expected things like this to work.

I'm taking next week off, so I think I'll be going with my wife when we take this in, with a printed 24 page copy of the TSB in case they have trouble finding it.

They don't check oil levels before changing, so they never would have noticed. They also would not tear the engine down to see the bad rings, so I don't know how they would ever notice this without just doing the TSB.....
